Brain Twisters #5!

This is a common paradox puzzle:

The Missing $

Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 is difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person. Now each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totaling $29. Where is the missing $?

The individual people cause this mess...

The group paid $30 (yes is 10 per person. That's NOT important) Then they get 5 back. Now they've paid $25 (8.34 per person). The bellboy takes $2. NOW they have paid $27 (25+2). So, now each had paid $9. BUT the manager paid out $5. So, where is it? The bellboy has $2 of it, the group gets the other $3. Make sense?

hi guys

not really a brain reaser is it? it all boils down to how you choose to work it out!

paid $30

refund $5

bellboy $2

bellboy pays $1 to each person so $25 + $1 + $1 +$1 = £28 + £2 for the bellboy = $30

and there you have  the solution

Too easy  :)

Correct! The part at the end was mis-leading you from the facts. There is NO missing ($).

Hi xbig, boy don't I feel like a loser!! Yep your right in that I made a typo or two but wrong in thinking it's a euro, it'a actually a pound sign. Thx for pointing that out to me. I will try to be more careful when typing in future, hehe.

The problem gives you all of the facts.  The group pays thirty dollars.  Five dollars is given to the bellboy, who keeps two dollars and gives three back to the group.

There's the five dollars!  The misdirection in this riddle is that the subtraction and the addition are done at the wrong times in order to confuse the reader.

It seems to the group as if they paid 27 dollars for their night, when the manager insists it was 25.  But when you add:

1. What the bellboy took

2. What the bellboy gave back

3. What the manager insists he charged his guests

Shazam!!!

You get Thirty Dollars!

It's simpler than I explained it.
