I think this is the main point to make... humans use words to express themselves. Strong emotions require certain words... and if none exist, then a person will make up their own. It's a psychological necessity.

As a matter of course these words aren't for polite company, and kids have yet to learn social norms, so we have parents and teachers giving rules about language that are meant to be outgrown... and also I assume that while adults understand the necessity of vulgarity on an instinctive level, many are too stupid to understand it beyond that... so among certain groups people will go around preaching that these words and even those who use them are somehow intrinsically bad... which is ridiculous.

If they don't go around and say the word is bad...

then what's the point of using the word in the first place?

Sure it's "bad" in the sense that it's not polite and only for certain situations, but I mean they'll say it's bad in a spiritual sense.

I think it's an opinion whether or not it's bad in a spiritual sense really.

There are some Christians who swear a lot, and some that never swear.

Well, to start, I think "supernatural" is a synonym with "fiction" (and I'm not trying to disrespect religion in a cute way, I really mean I think of them as synonyms) but that's a topic that results in mutes / locks.

But even if we allow that words have this kind of spiritual essence, I don't think it can be reasonably argued that some are intrinsically bad.

Hmm....................... ok.

I'm not on chess.com to convert people.

Well, think of it this way, words are tools... you can hurt someone with "nice" words and raise someone's spirits with "mean" words... so the words themselves are not bad, and even as a non-religious person I'll agree that words can hurt people.

There is no way he would of conducted himself in a manner which deserves a ban.

Something smells fishy to me.

Perhaps he ruffled the wrong feather's.

Don't go assuming things ur not aware of.

Itude was muted for 6 months.  The rationale behind such lengthy mutes has been to force to a member to write to support,  do some groveling and beg to have his voice reinstated -- as opposed to simply waiting out a 3 day or week mute.
Tired of the mutes (which he thought were either mistaken or unfair), he closed his own account.  He returned with one or two other accounts that were quickly closed as being mute-evasion accounts, a standard moderation policy.
All this is between Itude and chess.com since only they know the true facts of the matter.

That said, I'm uncomfortable with this long-mute tactic, finding it both insipid and disrespectful .... but it's their site and they can act any way they want.

Itude was no saint but I always felt he added a certain flavor to the forums.  I never thought of him as particularly abusive either, especially compared to dozens of others against whom no actions has been taken.  But chess.com of late has embraced irrationality.

The tangy flavor of sour grapes? Isn't bullying and badgering certain members considered abuse?

batgirl

He would attack me.  I didn't engage him at that point but I considered it more abrasive than abusive.  As an adult I can deal with abrasion.

Didn't read the thread. I will say: He got what he deserved. He really kept losing his mind to the point that he had to be removed.

Hopefully this is the last of the cry baby threads we have about him.

Some of the new mods are flat out annoying. They never let anyone have a free discussion in a forum without at least one of them editing an “offensive comment” or locking threads that they don’t like

I disagree, the mods were extremely lenient and let some discussions get extremely lengthy while it wasn't civil at all... They did a good job, maybe should have gotten rid of him sooner though.

Ron  , its been about 5 months since I left Open Discussion and at that time ' offensive comments ' ie personal insults, and general abuse were certainly not tolerated . You must be thinking back to the days when Jaclyn was SA.

he tried and got close to finding out my location 5-6yrs ago, then for a few months after that kept mentioning me in his chess.com profile as if we were friends and had met.

At the time he did that, he was blocked. go figure.

i'm glad he's gone and am surprised at batgirl for thinking he's normal

I just know him from our limited interactions and from my observations in the forums. However, your experiences sound kind of creepy.
