The other thing is that while profile views may not be the most useful of stats, it's a fun thing to have and doesn't do any harm.

The chess part of chess.com shouldn't be, but what is OTF then? If you don't mind me saying, you don't use chess.com for chess, you use it to connect with great people, have friends, engage in fun discussions like this one. That seems like the definition of a social media site to me...

Chess.com as a whole is not considered a social media site. For the benefit of most people, stats should be shown rather than social things like profile views or chat points.
But chess.com likes to add something that displays how active or popular you are socially. And chat points are much better for everyone who's active on OTF, clubs, DPC, blogs, and anything social.
