From my understanding, I think it was a dry bite. Small snakes don't produce a lot of venom. If they aren't hunting larger live prey, they will make smaller amounts, than in the wild. Chances are the snake opted to not inject when it bit him.They need their venom to help digest their food.
Those types of snakes normally cause some damage to tissue near the bite area that is only counteracted( not reversed) by antivenin. Normally you only get immunity to snake bite from injecting yourself with small doses of the venom over an extended period of time.
