chess.com censorship: is it going too far?

I’ve been censored for the first time today. My comments were clearly made in jest yet the gestapo saw got to remove them and send me a warning.

I don’t mind the censorship so much but warning me of my future conduct? Maybe the cultural barriers between the different countries has caused a misunderstanding, due to the differences in humour between the free world and the stricter regimes. I don’t know?

Does anyone else feel that over censorship is making the threads duller/less entertaining? Is it better without any interesting characters?

My Uncle used to tell me.

"If you're not doing anything wrong, you have nothing to worry about."

There are a lot of kids on the forums. They have to be careful.

Obviously not.  But I do believe that the advice still stands.   Will we at some point be subjected to lies, criticism, censorship, etc.?  Of course.  But I also am a firm believer in what my uncle said.  If its not true, then they are lies.  At the end of the day i will sleep well.

I completely agree. The censorship is going quite off the limit.

The OP may have a valid point.  But the problem is that chess.com is an internet website.  They make up the rules, they decide the rules.  This isn't like day to day life, where we have certain "rights".  Its the internet.  The only right, or more correctly "privilege" you have is to be able to access it.

This is the internet. Nothing prevents you from buying your own servers and your own domain, and starting your own website on which you can say whatever you wish, whenever you wish.

Until then, if you are going to be using chess.com's servers on chess.com's website, you should be prepared to follow chess.com's rules.

I agree with you hole heartedly bacon. They let me play for free. I use the threads for a little amusement between games. Their house their rules. However there is a list of rules for posting and if you are working with in these rules should you be censored?

Again that is my point.  chess.com is a website.  They make up and decide the rules.  If they want to change the rules at will?  That is their right.  This is why i dont let this stuff impact me anymore.  When i need to take a break from here i close my account.  When im ready to return, i ask them to reopen it.  Ideally, I just stay away from the forums, and dont get drawn into these drama sessions.

It’s not drama, I said something in jest, I can understand why it would be censored. But the fact is if people are not subjected to sarcasm, satire and irony how are they ever going to develop a sense of humour or objective character traits.

Problem is the woke society think everybody needs to be protected from everything.

I accept that this is their site and their rules and am quite prepared to accept consequences for anything I say. Good or bad. However it doesn’t make it wrong to question the authority.

Just ask navalny

I do agree with you society is entirely way to sensitive and gets "offended" way to easily.

Feel free to question chess.com all you want.  You have the entire internet to do that.  You can even do it here.  Just be prepared for the consequences :-)

Blue emu, I couldn’t agree more, I also accept that those in charge can interpret the rules as they wish. But an internet site operated in the western world tends to see it self as allowing freedom of speech as long as you avoid illegal or questionable activities

That’s right bacon

I don’t know how it is in America but a lot of tv shows madd in the 70’s 80’s and 90’s now carry warnings due to offensive humour.

It is every persons right to be offended nowadays!

I'm a 58 year old, white, christian, male with conservative views.  So you know what im thought of.  Do i let it impact my life?  No.  I was raised to respect people, and threat everyone with courtesy, and respect.  But at the same time, I will not bow down to all these minority groups that demand i accept everything as "normal".
