Chess players - nerds?

Nerd is simply a connotation, it has whatever meaning you give it. I personally do not feel I am a nerd, despite the fact that I enjoy noncharacteristic thing such as chess. I am proud to stand apart from the stereotype and norm, and, if that makes me a nerd, then so be it.

unfortunately, I am class-A nerd. Sleeps through and aces math... and spends everyday during lunch in our schools chess club... which I had to start....
well... if being a nerd is intelligent then i'm ok with it.... better to be intelligent & not a airhead. there is a saying about chess players. ´´Chess Players Mate Better´´

even though I play chess, i am not a nerd.
i know some chess players and they consider themselves as nerds.
Nerds are not bad people, it's who they are-so there's nothing wrong with them.
Nerds are Candy, NOT Chess Players.

I am a nerd. I have nerdy interests like chess. I do not see what is wrong with being a nerd, but many people think otherwise.
in actual fact the staticians are nerds themselves as they use computers to key in the info they get roflmao
You are all missing the point, i didnt say that being a nerd is good or bad, i just wander why is chess defaultly related to nerds ???
I always find this theme quite disturbing although statisics may not be in my favour. The most painful part is that my friends too support this thesis. I would like to hear how members of this chess.com comunity feel and think.
