Chess players - nerds?
Nerd is a word with a definitive definition. Whether or not someone sees you as fulfilling that definition is perceptual on their part.
No offense taken.
A rough definition I would give for nerd (which seems as good as any, especially since looking up slang is pretty useless) is "someone who devotes an unusually large amount of time to academic/intellectual persuits".
In my opnion, I satisfy that defintion, so I call myself a nerd. Since chess is an intellectual persuit, people who play chess are likely to be nerds. That's all I meant.
i,m a nerd and bring home the bank ...???? but i,m not smart like a young autistic kid i know who can whip my ass at chess :D
the true definination of a nerd is someone who use's a computer (dates to pre 1965) that can do something you / they can't...!!!!(inc me..)
a nerd is a candy made by the willy wonka company. delicious . by the way, is a hacker considered a nerd? everyone has their own hobbies & pasttimes. some people try to change the lives of others for no reason whatsoever. now remember some people use the word ´´nerd´´ with other words.
ex: someone who is obsessed with computer
´´computer nerd´´
someone obsessed with fashion
´´fashion nerd´´
etc.
Actually chess is a fun game ONLY if you just play it with your common sense, but people have made it an evil game by studying books and adopting pre existing techniques that i some times hate to play. These people actually cheat because they are not playing purely by their mind but by the experiences of others and that makes it like a job and not fun. I hate those cheaters and so called champions and chess fake gods. i like people who play spontneously, just using their own mind wisom tacics and common sense.because i like to play for fun not to drop others confidence down.bringing others self esteem down is no fun and i think its unhuman n cruel. we should treat it just a game and no more. and play using only your own mind and thinking.
Thanks,
Chessica

This thread is about nerd-dom, not whether studying is cheating.
You are all missing the point, i didnt say that being a nerd is good or bad, i just wander why is chess defaultly related to nerds ???
It's a simple stereotype,1 could blame media... When some people think of chess all they see is the whole cast of the "Revenge Of The Nerds" movie.Or Screech from saved by the bell.![]()
I'm a nerd I guess, but I often have to point the fact out to people who mistakenly laugh at my joke..... What does a constipated mathematician do? ----- you've heard it before? or guessed it? of course they work it out with a pencil.
Do you know anymore (good??) nerdy jokes?

Two atoms greet eachother on the street.
Atom 1: Hi, how are you?
Atom 2: I'm a bit distraught. I lost an electron.
Atom 1: Are you sure?
Atom 2: Yes. I'm positive.
I'm here every week.
From the Miriam Webster... ahem:
Nerd-
an unstylish, unattractive, or socially inept person; especially : one slavishly devoted to intellectual or academic pursuits
Since chess is an intellectual pursuit, an unstylish, unattractive or socially inept person who is slavishly devoted to chess would be a nerd.
Those who play chess for fun or amusement, or those of us who pursue chess in a manner that is not slavish, would not be considered nerds because of our interest in chess. However all you folks who feel you would die without chess (or any other intellectual pursuit) you are indeed a nerd and for that, you have my admiration.
