Comedy and Humor Through Music

It has always amazed me how some people can not say a thing and make us laugh with just a few notes on an instrument. Dana Carvey is the master, but there are others. There are also plenty of comedic musicians, and posting on the music threads and running across Steve Martin, who really can rip a banjo, and still rips it with his band who are all hot Nashville Cats, I couldn't find anywhere else to post this. More comedy than music, but Steve is a classic.

David Bromberg, Mojo Nixon, Dr. Demento, ???

Plastic Jesus. There are no good versions of Plastic Jesus I can find. I'll have to record it myself. My version is more fun than any of these. The song was originally written by two Radio DJs, Ed Rush and George Cromarty in 1957, on a whim and then it was covered by various artists and the lyrics were expanded on over the years. There are now at least twenty, if not fifty verses. I paired them down to eight, but I never recorded it. Someone needs to revitalize this one.

Here's Billy Idol with one of the only good versions. A different arrangement that works.

Finally, the one I heard in 1972. I've been looking for this one for years.

Not humorous, but won't fit into any other thread. I have found some of the most beautiful tunes in Sacred music. I started studying them when I ran out of other interesting progressions to study and Old Timey and secular music have many songs about Jesus.

Jerusalem, Jesus is Just Alright, Jesus is on that Mainline, ???

We need to start a Christian Music thread. Mylon LeFevre recorded an album in the seventies with Alvin Lee. On the Road to Freedom. Should be on YouBube. (It is.)

Excellent songs. Mylon had an active career in the Christian music scene.

Leo Kottke. He takes awhile to get going on the second one, but he's pretty funny. Music on ACL, and a few humorous observations, in the first.

I've always found this hilarious. It even gave me one of my favorite useful phrases, "Great googly moogly!". It fits a lot of occasions. So without further ado

Sheik Yerbouti is just about Zappa's funniest album. Good post.

Merle Haggard on a talk show doing imitations.

Another drive-by posting before I try mow before the rain.
I don't think I can start a video anywhere but the beginning. Here's a link to Professor Longhair doing "Cabbage Head". I can't find it as a single so this is in the middle of an album.
Professor Longhair - Cabbage Head

...and something else inflicted on me in my youth. I'm not sure this is meant to be too funny. It certainly seems laughable now

Allen Sherman mentions Leonard Skinner! That is some weird Jimmy Dean. I can see why he made more money in sausage. I always liked him as an actor. Wet Dream is the same vein of humor as Firesign Theater. He's no fun, he fell right over. I remember Stafford from the old days. He is quite the humorist and boy can he rip a guitar. Who'd a thunk it?

Dana Carvey is the King of Musical Humor. Here he is with a "real" musician.

What do you call a musician in Austin without a girlfriend? Homeless. Carless.
