You mean the Giza Pyramid of Egypt and the others nearby? A few years ago, archeologists actually discovered original Egyptian records describing in great detail the building process of the Pyramids. I watched the documentary on the History channel a while ago.

The records were stored in an Egyptian warehouse, but the records survived for archeologists to discover because the roof was this heavy rock (limestone if I recall) and the roof collapsed and basically preserved the documents underneath.

They diverted water from the Nile River during the rainy season to literally have ships of building materials sail right up to the base of the pyramid being built. They then used pulley systems to bring the large blocks up the construction. The records found even names each worker, their job description and how much their salary was. The entire project of the pyramid building was a way to honor the pharaoh, but also a way of displaying national pride. The civilian builders were all highly skilled in their trade and being a part of this massive undertaking was a great source of pride in country.
