Lord of the Rings(all three extended editions considered as one film): A wonderful medieval tribute filled with faith, friendship and perseverance during impossible times. Also, probably the bestbook adaptation ever.
Gladiator: An excellent story about a man willing to sacrifice all for honor, family and country. In a similar fashion, Joaquin Phoenix does a wonderful job creating an authentic and tragic villain. After Spartacus, it is probably the next best film set in ancient Rome.
Gettysburg: The little film that could. In many ways, it achieved author Michael Shaara's goal of creating an American version of Shakespeare's Henry V. A wonderful account of a crucial day in American history filled with both personal pathos as well as authentic military detailing. Action and heart: you can't be that combination.
If I had to pick only one scene as my favorite, it would have to be in the movie 61* (directed by Billy Crystal for HBO) about Micky Mantle and Roger Marris trying to hit 61 home runs in 1961 thus breaking Babe Ruth's single season record.
GREAT MOVIE!! If you haven't seen it yet, you should. You don't need to be a baseball fan to enjoy it, because it's not really a baseball movie. It's a movie about a couple of guys who happen to play baseball, thus baseball is merely the setting, not the focus.
Anyway, my favorite scene is about 45 minutes into the movie when Roger Marris bunts the ball to win the game (it's the only bunt in the movie). Just before the bunt you will see an amazingly handsome young man (wearing an ugly brown shirt) sitting in the front row over the Yankee dugout cheering Roger on. ![]()
This is one of the ONLY times I will EVER recommend AGAINST buying the letterbox version. People will often say, "Why do they put those bars over the picture?" To which I must explain that they are not putting bars OVER the picture, thus showing you less, they are in fact NOT chopping off the sides to fit your screen, thus showing you MORE of the picture.
61* is the exception to the rule. The movie was made for HBO, thus it was made with a TV aspect ratio. When I saw it on TV, and even when I saw the Premiere at Detroit's Fox Theater, it was in the 4:3 aspect ratio (TV shaped), and there I was - larger than life on the big screen. It was SO COOL! But when I bought the DVD, it only comes in widesceen format so they DID actually put black bars on the top and bottom thus cutting my face in half. ![]()
Oh well. Still a GREAT movie! If you like laughing at low-budget horror films as much as I do, check out my most recent movie, LONG LIVE THE DEAD, at www.alienstoneentertainment.com. I'm one of the main characters, and one of the last people to get killed by the zombies. ![]()
George C. Scott's opening speech in Patton:
"We're going to rip out their living guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks!"
I'm sorry, I thought this was a favorite film thread. I see now that it is more about a favorite film scene. In that case: Gladiator when Maximus tells Marcus Aurelius that "I have seen the rest of the world and it is cruel and dark. Rome is the light!".
I love the patriotic sentiments in that line.
I love the scene from ''Creep'' called Mandys Death. You can find it on youtube but not for the faint hearted.
Equilibrium - When John Preston decides to run amok and kill 1000 (okay I might be exagerrating but it was close...) clueless men per minute with his dual guns.
Also pretty much any twist ending, 7, Donnie Darko etc etc
On that subject... oldish I know, but Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis completely foxed me - never saw that coming with him actually being dead. Also, what about the ending of The Usual Suspects... you never saw that ending til they showed all the pieces of the puzzle and the penny dropped! Excellent film.
The Matrix trilogy. All three had phenominal graphics.
Agent Smith: "I want everything"
Morphius: "Would that include a bullet from this gun?"
