If I remove a name from my" friends " list,does the person receive notice ? Many of my friend requestors  seem to be  no longer interested.

I don't believe they receive notice, but your name will be automatically removed from their "friends" list as well

No it is just the end of the road.

I sometimes delete friends who are no longer active unless they are great friends who I hope will return some day.
