Babe Ruth?

not the Bambino

It has to have been Lou Gehrig. Btw, Gehrig was not only a great hitter, but his prowess at the bat contributed greatly to the Bambino's records. Ruth batted number 3 in the lineup and Lou batted 4th. Pitchers could not pitch around Ruth because putting another runner on base for Gehrig would be suicidal. So the Babe got a lot more pitches to hit than he would have with someone like me -- a baseball patzer, if you will -- hitting behind him.
