Read Nellies book on her time in the asylum, confirmed my worst suspicions.  Many women removed from society and placed in asylum for ulterior motives, cruel and jealous husbands, out of wedlock childbirth etc.  Compelling reading.

While I will in no way attempt to defend Mother Teresa, the use of resources at her disposal nor her ideology one must ask what Mr Hitchens has done to relieve the suffering of others?  You see its all very easy to point out the flaws in others but its rank hypocrisy if we have done nothing ourselves.  He has an agenda from his anti-religious sensibilities for doing so does he not and is therefore hardly the most objective of commentators, don't you think?  While this is not intended to undermine the veracity of his claims which may or may not be true it does demonstrate that he has motive for doing so.

Whatever the facts are, they stand independent of motive, no.

Yes so lets consider the facts.  Let us take the first statement in the article.

Mother Teresa was a moral monster, a sadistic religious fanatic guilty of medical malpractice.

What facts does it contain? Actually none.  Its a piece of sensationalist tabloid journalism inflammatory in nature, pitched at the choir and contains two opinions masquerading as fact and a truth claim.  One wonders why this should be the case because surely truth has a potency all of its own and there is no necessity to vilify the target in this way by framing the article in such caustic rhetoric.  Furthermore it appears to me that the author has completely failed to even attempt to understand the position of Mother Teressa and why she was allegedly an advocate of poverty.  Does that make her sadistic, a moral monster, hardly, it makes her nothing more than an ascetic. This is the problem when you have already taken a stance as Hitchens has caused by his atheistic sensibilities, for him its a room full of mirrors. He can neither understand nor wants to understand Mother Teressa's motivations and ideology and is content simply to attempt to vilify her instead.

This brings us to the truth claim.  Mother Teressa was guilty of medical malpractice?  Is Mother Teressa a trained doctor?  Does she even practice medicine?  Do her hospices claim to be hospitals? If not then its very difficult to state that she herself is guilty of medical malpractice.  The claims made by the Canadian University website listed in the article contain NO actual data, simply this statement here.

but that the majority of patients were not cared for properly and many were left to die

Are we simply meant to swallow this hook line and sinker without a shred of credible evidence? In fact it seems that the Canadian academics in the best academic tradition compiled their claims exclusively from paperwork.  I think we should give them much more credence had they been on the ground, in the slums of India observing first hand the work rather than perusing through some peer reviewed papers in a leafy suburb of Ottawa.

I am not saying that Mother Teressa should or could have done more with the resources at her disposal but I am also prepared to attempt to understand her perspective and ideology and try to remain objective as much as possible.  We are chess players, objectivity is everything and understanding is the thing to be aimed for. wink.png

Just finished a book.  The Death of Christian Britain looking at the phenomena of the secularisation of the UK which essentially happened post 1950's.  Author makes the claim that it was essentially because women left the church in droves in the 1960's where prior to this culturally women were the custodians of these moral and ethical values and seen as the pinnacle of their outworking.  Not entirely convinced its been for the better though although some would argue otherwise and with good reason.

Not Hitchens.

Really Whip_Kitten are you trollin me now? wink.png  A scene from a concentration camp? really, I mean really?  Clearly Gonzalez was never incarcerated by the Nazis. Please don't make me go through the article and critique it.  I have never been to a Mother Teressa hospice for the dying and its unfair to evaluate standards of treatment in India with standards of treatment elsewhere, anyone who has been to India will tell you its an entirely different world.  Still if she was sitting on all the momo and refused to spread it about that's difficult to defend and deserves censure for sure. CNN - lol.

If anyone would like a culturally authentic glimpse into slum life in India I recommend convicted bank robber Gregory Roberts book Shantaram.  Although its a work of fiction he clearly draws on real life experiences that no one could have gleaned lest they had actually lived it.

RoobieRoo

Stick to The Dandy and The Beano Kaydo the book is over 700 pages long, not for the semi literate East Coast ruffian high on internet memes although saying that you might be able to identify with its criminal elements. The author after all was a convicted bank robber and heroin addict that managed to escape a top security Aussie jail in real life. Heck Edinburgh is full of the likes! wink.png

haha yah muckle scunner, you need to go back to the future.  Still at least the Hibees are back in the SPFL!

RoobieRoo

Unbelievable, really unbelievable.  Typical accountant cooks the books and then slithers away.  Still you think thats bad? I am reading about a couple in Los Angeles, Angel and Jennifer Mendez a homeless couple.  The police bust into their shack without a warrant, without announcing their presence looking for a fugitive and pummel them with fifteen bullets,  She was pregnant at the time shot in the back.  They miraculously both survived although he had to have his leg amputated below the knee but the US supreme court ruled that the police acted within their jurisdiction?  Thats pure wired man!

Ummm I don't think that makes any rational sense.  We get banned for alleged body shaming (Kaydo posted a picture of a rotund lady) and you get away with whatever you like.  Clearly Baby_Tigerrr is away on safari and you are simply trying to get as much trollin done before she gets back and whupps yo sowwy a$$

Heard Mother Teresa was considered a heartless witch in Calcutta.

yeah, I don't buy it. when you are up to your ass in corpses, feces, and diseased, starving people, sometime you have to triage, deal with those who can be saved, make the most of an awful situation. It's easy for a snotty, self-righteous, Christian-bashing American twit in New York City to slam a woman who spent her life dealing with others' misery. India and the U.S. are like 2 different planets. I'm not fond of armchair Americans taking cheapshots at those less fortunate. She had to live in the real world. Her critics should give it a try sometime
