Happy Pride

#52 That’s completely true. You can’t post something and expect that everyone will agree. As an artist I know this is very true because not everyone likes the same kind of art. Some people might love it with their entire heart and some might send you hate mail (that’s a bit extreme but it sometimes happens you know). There will always be someone who disagrees. I support the LGBTQ+ community btw.

It's the off-topic section; it's Pride month; it's not trying to be controversial. Pride is celebrated across the world and has been for years, it's ingrained into many cultures at this point.

Almost every topic is controversial in the sense that someone will vehemently disagree and/or get offended. But that shouldn't prevent normal threads on normal topics. This is one of those.

Obviously. But this would and can cause much more tension than a thread on “What’s you favorite chess piece?” That’s a topic where religion or politics do not come into play. Some religions are not supporters of the LGBT community. Some political groups too. That should be something g you are aware of as this is a very diverse site with many people, beliefs, politics, and religion.

Sure.

Chess discussion belongs in general chess discussion.

Othe non-politics and non-religious stuff belongs in off-topic.

Many things can be tangentially religious or political: evolution, pop music, Christmas, cosmology, Halloween, dating, education, etc etc.

I'm not sure what the alternative is for off topic, other than endless threads on who can count the highest or what's your favourite colour.

If Pride is a controversial or verboten topic for some, then they're under no pressure to post here.

Alright then. So if you say that there is no pressure for one to post here, then why can I not post a topic on Trump or Biden or other politicians? There is no pressure to post in those threads either… yet there is no need to post those threads because all it will cause is tension…

Religious and political threads are strictly prohibited, the pinned forum thread in Off Topic literally says so lol

It’s not for the sake of avoiding tension, I’ve seen a few threads wanting to discuss religion. Many of them got closed

Wow another of these threads

I'm afraid I don't make the rules.

The admins here have decided that all directly political and religious topics are forbidden. But they allow many other topics, including ones that could be considered controversial by some (like evolution or Pride).

If you like to discuss politics and religion, then I can recommend joining a discussion club here on the site. I'm in one and I talk about all kinds of things there.

Edit (addition):

One possible way to view it would be that the difference is that some things are always going to be controversial by their nature (politics/religion), but some things which are controversial don't need to be and shouldn't be (there should be no controversy over evolution, holocaust memorials, or lgbtq+ stuff).

Some lgbtq+ threads are created by lgbtq+ positive people for the positive discussion of lgbtq+ stuff.

Many are created by anti-lgbtq+ folk with the intention to cause arguments, insult or mock people, or otherwise cause trouble.

Many of both kinds are locked because anti-lgbtq+ folk and trolls fill them with hate and bilge. New threads are thus created to replace them.

If only the first sort existed, and if only trolls didn't post in them, then there wouldn't be many of these threads.

The proliferation of these threads is almost entirely because of the actions of bigots.

That said, there's not that many at all anyway. Far more on games, for example.

Well if you keep having to replace them, maybe stop trying?

From your edit: All people who believe the Holocaust is untrue and a thing made to create publicity are truly crazy, ignorant, and racist people. Evolution is a religious topic. Many devout Christians believe the Bible’s teachings of evolution. Not sciences’. Other faiths too. LGBT is another controversy- religious and political topic. I agree with the Holocaust statement but the others just seem to controversial- what’s the headline of the news this week in many newspapers? Pride. Not Holocaust memorials, not evolution. Each political group and religious group interprets LGBT is own different way. Some support it, some don’t. Controversy right there.

Went inactive due to the ridiculous amount of wasteful and inappropriate threads on here. Came back last week. I’m doing well.

You’re welcome ^^

But evolution and Pride shouldn't be controversial. Denial of evolution or lgbtq+ rights should become like holocaust denial. And to ensure that threads like this should be permitted to exist. Whereas politics should be controversial since it should have disagreements.

No one should disagree on established science or human rights; people should disagree on politics.

One way to view this is through that lens.

It's just one way to understand the difference in moderation, though.

Bit of a stereotype?

That seems to give trolls the power to close down any thread on any topic. Bad protocol.
