I guess this is where you introduce yourself.

I'm 57, on disability and have 3 dogs. I'm a failed Artist (Painting and Drawing), an SF/Fantasy author whose books don't sell very well and I belong to several Forums where I'm a frequent contributor.

I am also a good Amateur Firearms designer. I designed the Rastina Ophelia Modern Topbreak Revolver and I'll be happy to "E" Mail machinist's drawings to anyone who cares to PM me an Address...

{I have hopes that someday someone will want to actually Build Rastina Ophelia in the Flesh...}

I was very deeply into Chess in the mid 70's. I studied hours every day. Not that I was very good. I guesstimated my rating at 1200 and losing every game in every tournament that I played in had my rating below 400 in no time.

I liked the Danish Gambit, the King's Gambit and played the French or the Nimzo-Indian as Black.

I always looked at 1. P-Q4 as a Churlish way to spoil a Chess game right at the beginning.

I never learned nor liked the idea of Algebraic Notation--though knowing it is a necessity to follow Chess nowadays.

(Are there any good Contemporary Chess Books written in Descriptive? Any Programs that Translate?)

(I loathe and despise the Metric System too...)

I'm hoping that starting with a near clean slate (forgotten most of my memorized openings...) maybe I can learn to be a bit more than a disaster as a player.

Sounds like you're going to fit in here just fine.  As a welcome gift, let me link you to 25 free Chess Mentor courses.  They're very well done, will act as a refresher course, and gently guide you into Algebraic notation.  Enjoy!
