Did you read the TOS when you signed up?

its not about whether the TOS says its ok to do, its an issue of whether the mods could have handled this better.

Of course its about the TOS.  It explains what can and cant be done here.  Whether the OP thinks what he said is a terrible word or not, it violated the TOS.

Also read up on websites, the internet, and "rights"  Its not like the real world.

agreed mayhaps, same thing happened to me. I think the mods are way too strict

So...you dont think saying "korchnoi's a d%%k" should be banned?

Wow...

Coach-Bill

Let me tell the two posters who were banned for 30 minutes I was the one who did it. In the latter case we had the S-Bomb.

First, have a look at this topic: http://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/chat-rooms-during-live-streaming

The first day of the championship was brutal with many testosterone  laced posts directed at Jen Shahade. We were throwing out the warnings left and right and it didn't stop. The mods of Live TV were basically told to be more vigourous handing out the bans.

Let me interject that profanity in Live Chat is an instant ban. This is chess.com policy. It isn't permanent, you can come back in 30 minutes. There are kids who frequent the site and even if they already know these words, they don't need a reminder. If you disagree with the policy on profanity, you are welcome to contact the site owners, either Erik, or Danny Rensch.

Anyone who knows me, knows I am a friendly person and don't like getting anyone in trouble. I can tell you from personal work experience as a teacher when you tell someone to stop misbehaving, they keep at it. Hwever, if you send them to the office to cool them down, the rest the class shapes up. When we ban someone in Live Chat, that tends to keep things in line. It is always in line, until the bad stuff gets posted. Then it only gets worse unless dealt with. I was the only mod in there at the time. Do you know how boring it is to sit there and read every post as they constantly scroll by? Do you understand now how hard I was working that first day sending out warnings which weren't helping tone things down?

Most importantly, you know why you were banned, and the example helped others avoid the same fate. You are both welcome back to the broadcasts and please feel free to contribute your thoughts.

By the way, I spent a day with Viktor Korchnoi back in 1983. He is a wonderful human being and even agreed to pose for photos with all of my friends the next day.

I have been muted. I do not believe I used an expletive or said anything offensive. I have no clue why I was muted and received no notice, e-mail or otherwise, except a generic "next time you will be banned."

It's been more than half an hour and I cannot ask in help and I'm not sure there's an admin. Not sure what's going on here or what I do from here.

Maybe you were spamming...say repeated posts such as

or maybe you were using Cap locks....

I'm finding the chess.com/tv mods overly strict and out of line these days. I was just muted for saying "Tyson Mao is a badass name" - that is not a swear, and even if a mod considers it inappropriate, being muted for an hour is incredibly harsh and over the top. At the very least, I should be offered a warning to watch my language, rather than being immediately muted with no explanation, and no mod will accept my private chat requests. I'm just afraid that these mods are ostracizing the paying members of the chess.com community. I think mayhaps is right, I don't think these mods can handle the responsibility without going overboard with their power - chess.com needs to create a bot that deals with it automatically like one on twitch.tv

I've always accepted every request for a private chat and accepted every single one of them today too.

If you're muted, it's only for 30 minutes.

There were several instances of people being repeatedly warned for the same offense today. I had to kick two who flooded the chat with profanity.

The mods work hard to ensure a friendly and clean environment for members who want to enjoy the show and must do what's necessary to keep it that way when members violate the rules.

The answer isn't to rail against the mods who do a great job, but rather channel that energy into making sure you don't violate the rules and there won't be anything to be muted for in the future.

Chess.com/TV is not a forum. The're broadcasting, and if they don't take appropriate steps to show that they are responcible, they could lose that broadcasting lisense.

Haha badass does not mean bad... it's the exact opposite. I wouldn't have said it had I known it would get me muted...

I can see a lot of people are coming to the mods' defense, but honestly I'm not the only one making this complaint. Many have told me they have also been frustrated by the stringent rules, and one mod even apologized to me as well (he knows that I'm a regular on chess.com and my intent is certainly not to be provocative/inappropriate/etc).

@learningthemoves you should know it's actually a 60 minute mute, which is a very long time for any live chat, and also I'm not trying to make excuses. I just want the mods to be a little more aware or prudent about keeping a friendly/clean environment, while at the same time not being overbearing, where users are afraid to speak their mind. Of course I personally will try/have been trying to be more self-aware of what I say, but you have to keep the modding within reason. I am a mod on other sites, so I'm very familiar with the space. In my opinion, it's about striking a good balance. Something that would suggest and think would definitely help would be to give warnings to those who aren't trying to chat flood, troll, or make derogatory/profane comments. Because many who have been muted were truly not in this category. Anyway, I apologize for the long-winded response, but I hope the mods take this to heart, as this site means a lot to me and many others Smile

Ah, I didn't know it was in live chess you were talking about, but I was thinking about the Chess TV Show chat. In any case, the big takeaway here going forward is just to avoid typing those 4 letter words you know raise red flags and lower mute hammers. I think it is a good suggestion you made Jeremy about giving a warning first. In fact, that's exactly what the mute is because it's only temporary.

                  Temporary--Sealed         Permanent--Yell GET OUT!

I'm not sure my opinion on the matter does matter. I will still write it down.

I think some 'moderators' are clearly overdoing it. Deliberately banning people from live chat basically because they have a different opinion or because 'they can'.

This happened to me twice while I was not using any kind of abusive language. Since on the one hand the live chat utility is important to me and on the other hand freedom of speech seems secondary on this site and not working I decided to terminate my account and stop supporting chess.com.

My chat totally won't work, the thing doesn't show up, but I don't usually chit-chat anyway so it doesn't matter too mcuh

FoxyThePirateKid

I got banned for talking with someone in Spanish in the Debate+ chatroom, I think that's a little overboard, someone explain why? And is it banned forever or a period of time?
