When I spoke with the Heritage Lottery about funding youth projects, they said that they would fund history projects looking at events before the participants were born. The youngest kids we worked with were 13. So, according to them, history is 2013 and before. Made me feel old :)

Gregg-Turkington

Ive been told that there is a difference between history and historiography.

More letters? :)

Nice lol

Most things we think of as history are actually old propaganda. For example, if you were invading a country 2500 years ago with your army and you got the pant beat off of you, you would tell your people hen you got back that the enemy had tons of warriors regardless of how many there actually were to make yourself look better. Same thing goes for ww1 you’d make lies about your enemies to make your soldiers want to kill them and if you won you would not want to admit to lying.

That is an example of historiography.  There’s what is reported vs. what actually happened.

explodingmacaroni

And most of what actually happened is lost in time

explodingmacaroni

But you can use the assumption that people use propaganda to make educated guesses at the true facts

explodingmacaroni

So if the losers of a fight say that the winners had 1000 soldiers (let’s say that the losers had 500) you can assume that the losers are trying to. Are themselves look better, and that the winners had less numbers then reported

explodingmacaroni

It doesn’t help that military reports are sketchy

Gregg-Turkington

I don’t know if that’s exactly propaganda though.

explodingmacaroni

Propaganda is basically lying about the past and present to help thecause or memory of something

explodingmacaroni

I think

Gregg-Turkington

I guess thats debatable.  Usually I think of propaganda as ill intended.  I don’t think that all exaggeration has bad intentions about it.  Like hyperbole, we use it to emphasize something.

Gregg-Turkington

You know what we need?

explodingmacaroni

What?

Gregg-Turkington

A time machine.
