What is the fastest way to learn to be able to defend yourself? I don't really want to go too in depth and have too much commitment. I just want to be able to defend myself when needed.
Like Chess, martial arts takes years of practice to become proficient, and there are no shortcuts. Outside of that statement, learn and practice punching, kneeing, and elbowing a heavy bag. When you can repeatedly punch full power and not buckle your wrist or tear the skin off of your knuckles, you are ready.
And if you are fighting for your life remember anything goes.....In other words fight dirty, because the guy trying to kill you certainly isn't being fair.

I don’t believe in the term, “fighting dirty.” I fight to end the fight by whatever means available.
To each his own, but I think it pretty much means the same thing.

Yes I see, that martial arts takes years to master. However, I am thinking about just certain moves that would be sufficient to run away if needed. For example, maybe someone swings an arm at me, what do I do? Maybe there is a move which is easy to learn. I don't want to learn a full on martial art - just a little so I can defend myself is all I need.

That depends on how he swings his arm at you.
From the styles of martial arts (and I assume you trained in multiple), which has been the most practical? Or do you blend styles?
@ExploringWA completely off topic, but do you watch Paul Harrell?
I’ve never heard of him.
He makes firearms related videos for youtube....he's very educational....and his videos are practical.
Hmmm...was the OP edited after the fact? I guess the point is moot...I should have figured that nobody would have heard of Six Sigma black belt certification here .
And a good thing too. Nobody needs to hear DMAIC when they're designing an IC with a DMA.
Okay, somebody knows

The bunny maintains that he knows nothing

Thank you. I will look him up. I’m also Master class in U.S.P.S.A., and I’ve won speed steel state championships in both Oregon and Washington. Armed and unarmed defensive tactics has always been my focus.
Wow, pretty good.
Okay, scenario.....you're in a small room, say a workshop, and suddenly a man with a knife kicks in the door and says he is going to kill you. What do you do?
Ask him for a cup of coffee, if he rejects....close the door.
I did Judo as a kid. We used to mess around a lot, climbing out of the building's windows and climbing on the roof.
Then I did Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a couple of years quite seriously with very good coaches.
I might do Muay Thai when covid ends, just because it's part of a membership deal at a place near where I am.

That was a specific example.
Mmmm, lots of fancy talking for not much, imo. I really think, there is to much wrapping in fancy talking of these martial arts and close combat things, that could be said in much soberer ways. Like I see lots of totally pointless moves in martial arts public demonstrations. Lots of theater in it all.
I'm not saying martial arts are useless or ineffective all the time, but they're much glorified katas, when the ego, hidden behind fake "oriental style" humility begins the "bragging" in order to impress the audience. Very probably an unconscious thing btw...
Say all this next time u see someone actually trained in martial arts on the street, lets see how long u last before ur skulls bouncing off the kanvas.

How to save your child who is about to get killed by a murderer with a knife if you are standing 20 feets away from him. Do you know any ninja technique for this?
I'm not sure how much 20 feet is, but if it's such a distance, the best in such case, is to run toward the attacker, jump and make yourself a ball to hit them with all your weight. That should do it for having your kid not stabbed for a moment.
A guy tried that on me once.....I just stepped aside and kicked him in the kidneys as he went by.
