Anyone wonder why cats are less “friendly” or more “independent” than dogs?

The following encyclopedia article says that cats did not have a history of living in packs, which is why they didn’t have the same social interdependence living patterns that dogs had.

Please look at the article I provided and read whichever section you want, and then comment with your thoughts.

If you have another article that you think would add to the discussion, please share it.

Thank you for visiting this thread. It will be neat, but not purr-fect like cats.

I personally like dogs better. Their social dependence is what makes them interesting and fun to interact with in my opinion. The dogs' friendly nature makes them some of the most fun pets to have.

Now, are cats more evil by nature then dogs?

Avatar of Destroyer942
Well I think they do hurt their owner more frequently.

Yeah, what's with that, they aren't met to be found in packs, but hurting everything derives from what?

But compare the amount of dog killings/serious injuries to those of cats.

Well that explains why I'm so mean...

I mean I have a cat. I'm quite sure he's evil. They all are. But they're still better then dogs. :)

I like both dogs and cats. Now does any cat lover have anything to add? I’m specifically looking for new knowledge. Maybe you even have a personal experience to share.

I also have to say that “less friendly” and “more independent” are meant to be neutral words, nothing about how good or bad dogs and cats compare.

I also think it’s difficult to say whether cats are more or less evil. Maybe their behavior might appear to be evil. What do you exactly mean when you say “evil”?

Cottonsock, I like how you explained your view on something easily interpreted otherwise. My dad used to strongly dislike cats, but his opinion changed ever since my parents took in my sister’s cat as their own. I’m not saying that everyone should change what they think, but I believe many people say they don’t like something without experiencing it. I remember as a child reading “Green Eggs and Ham” by Dr. Seuss. The unnamed character claimed that he didn’t like green eggs and ham, but he actually never tried it, and when he did, he liked it.

Dogs want a leader for their pack.  That's you.  And you must walk them every day.

Cats are more independent.  Get two of them.  They are usually affectionate, and with two they will entertain themselves, but still visit you when they want to touch base.

Much less maintenance than dogs.  Just change their litter once per week.  grin.png

P.S. they are always clean, and take up lots less space in your bed at night.  Plus they are always walking their territory, and policing your house for intruders.

What's not to like?

I definitely think it’s a good idea for a person to consider what they want in a pet before they decide if they want a dog or a cat. For everlasting affection, get a dog; if one wants to be able to ignore their pet for a couple of hours, get a cat. Dogs are high maintenance, but you know that they’ll always give you attention. Cats are also affectionate, but for shorter periods of time.

Unplucked, I agree that cats can be very friendly. “Less friendly” is an overall perception by the general human population.

If you search “cats less friendly than dogs,” you’ll find numerous articles justifying why cats are just as or more friendly than dogs. If many people work to convince others about a misconception, then that means that there are plenty of people who have that misconception.

Just to be clear, I’m referring to the authors who believe that cats actually are just as friendly or more friendly than dogs. They have to justify their opinion, because so many people disagree with them.

The purpose of this thread is not to debate about whether an article that no one read is supported by facts. It is to discuss what people know or want to know about cats. If you have an article that you want to discuss, please share it here.

As for cat facts- apparently most are milk-intolerant.

Thanks, James. I’m open to hear more facts about cats.
