Don't you find it fricking hilarious that yesterday I called Jamie a clear narcissitic headcase and today she writes a blog about narcissitic trolls and how horrible they are? I totally agree. Too bad you don't see it in yourself, Jamie. You blocked me. Too bad.

Yes, quite funny, Jamie / iron lung / kaynight / RJ Cote...  are you all the same person? Seriously its hard to tell ...

Stupidity knows no bounds.

You have used your one "annoyingly dumb" post quota.

Your definition of a troll is ridiculous. There are good and bad people, there are good and bad trolls.

If that was directed at the opening post, it is the opinion of the study's authors.

I endorse the findings, and apply them to the troll personalities active on the site.

"Good troll" is an oxymoron.

Actually, this is the 2nd thread started about internet trolls because Chess.com doesn't seem to care to do something about insults and bullying.      Kikionfire, can you please copy and paste ANY post you EVER made on this site that is contructive, helpful, relavant, friendly OR nice???

No es posible.

The kiki persona exists to annoy people.  Needs to come out of his Mom's basement.

True.  It speaks poorly of the intellectual abilities of anyone who thinks differently.

This depends on how you define trolling. If you mean offensive trolling, then yes. But there are people who engage in activities which could be considered trolling who aren't offensive, and some of them are even amusing. Take Kaynight, for instance. I consider him a troll of a harmless variety.

Don't you think the narcissistic trolls are likely to consider this thread a victory for them? I don't think they're worthy of the attention. One or two have found their way onto my blocked list, but beyond that I don't really worry about them.

If they want to "declare victory," I don't care.  I have silenced their voices in my topics, and that suits my needs.

@Theron: he won't like that!

The problem is not the trolls. You can't change that. What we can do is put more pressure on chess.com to clean up their forums. V3 is here. Its up and working, so what could they possibly be more busy with?Undecided

Yes, exactly. You don't really care what they say. So why not just block them and have done with it? Why devote enough time to them to create a thread about them?

I didn't see an announcement that V3 is finalized.  Is it?  Do you use it & if so how do you like it?  What are its advantages?

thanks, xlote

xlote, just scoll to the bottom of the page, and try it yourself. Let us know if there are LESS trolls in V3 than in V2.

I've tried it to look at.  I prefer V2 currently.  I want to know if V3 is ready and if there is a good reason to change.

I got chased away by relentess trolling earlier in the year.

I came back to confront them and to expose them.

Ask, by PM, if you want to know more.  I can give you concrete examples.

I hate this. I have a friend left this site for this reason. If ever you want to talk to someone that you can trust about this issue feel free to message me. It's awful people should feel so tormented. Don't listen to them. What do they know?

You can't tease anyone on this thread knight!

Your hands are tied behind your back!

I suppose though you are an example of how it's healthy for us to disagree and also gently and innocently tease one another.

I certainly enjoy your light hearted innocent banter

Maybe this is why you are getting stressed. You don't need to silence anyone . Just be yourself and allow others to be themselves too.

Live by example. Who are you to dictate what people can and can't say anyway? What makes you right?

Trolls don't annoy me that much. Me being a highly skilled shitposter myself, I can recognize when someone is shitposting and/or being a troll. And honestly, I can see why they do it. It's super fun to see reactions from people who think you're being serious. That all that being said, I report trolls whenever I see them.

You need to look at the underlying motivations.

Satirical posts, like those in which Kaynight specialize, are intended to be humorous.

Trolls intend to cause upset.

Avatar of JamieDelarosa

It is hard for me to tell where many of the trolls are from.  Because trolls are often adept liars, they will make all sorts of claims.

It is that Machiavellian aspect to their personality.

But, almost every troll's ambition is to feed their self-esteem.  They are such pathetic people, it shows through no matter how much they try to disguise it.

One can post observations that might be unwelcome by some, but may cause others to actually think!  One can post humor or satire, that some will find funny or witty, and others my not.

That is just part of debate and commentary.

But as the authors of the study point out, "... it seems like there is no real purpose behind their comments except to upset everyone else involved. Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response."

... and how to identify them at chess.com

Internet Trolls Are Narcissists, Psychopaths, and Sadists
Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response.

"Let's start by getting our definitions straight: An Internet troll is someone who comes into a discussion and posts comments designed to upset or disrupt the conversation. Often, in fact, it seems like there is no real purpose behind their comments except to upset everyone else involved. Trolls will lie, exaggerate, and offend to get a response.

"What kind of person would do this? Some Canadian researchers decided to find out.

"They conducted two online studies with over 1,200 people, giving personality tests to each subject along with a survey about their Internet commenting behavior. They were looking for evidence that linked trolling with the "Dark Tetrad" of personality traits: narcissim, Machiavellianism, psychopthy, and sadism.

"They found that Dark Tetrad scores were highest among people who said trolling was their favorite Internet activity...

"Look at how low the Dark Tetrad scores are for everyone except the trolls! Their scores for all four traits soar on the chart. The relationship between trolling and the Dark Tetrad is so significant that the authors write in their paper:

"... the associations between sadism and GAIT (Global Assessment of Internet Trolling) scores were so strong that it might be said that online trolls are prototypical everyday sadists." [emphasis added]

"Trolls truly enjoy making you feel bad. To quote the authors once more (because this is a truly quotable article): "Both trolls and sadists feel sadistic glee at the distress of others. Sadists just want to have fun ... and the Internet is their playground!""

Interesting...

But unfortunately, the internet is where trolling happens the most.

It is nearly impossible to get rid of it.
