(That was from every B movie detective film in the 1930's.  Always set in New York City.  Always had a scene where someone ended up lying on the sidewalk.  The police officer was always an "Irish cop.")  

(I'm explaining all this for people who've forgotten their film history because they've been playing too much chess, since, as we all know, "Chess Is Bad for Your Brain!")

To the contrary, I think my brain is bad for chess.

Oh, great!  Now, for cripe's sake, I'm feeling compelled to access the extremely limited number of extant neuronal connections in my prefrontal cortex in some vain attempt to process "circular causality" as expressed, presumably, in "a downward spiral."  Wasn't this a website designed for "game-playing?!"
