Is Chess Bad for your Brain?

Sort:

I don't have any clue about any of this.  Is there anyone here who can answer any of these questions?  ....No?  Then maybe chess really is bad for your brain.  But I keep playing it anyway.

Are my skills as a chess player any better than they used to be?  No, but I don't have any plans to stop.

Anywhere there's a game, I'll be there.  Anywhere there's a queen fork to fall into, I'll fall into it.  Any time there's time to waste, I'll be wasting it.  Are any of you still reading this?  Don't you have any sense?  Any work you should be doing? Undecided

Today is the first day of the rest of your life. I wonder if anything's on TV?

DrSpudnik

Lol -- It's like you really Know me!

P.S.  Also, please to remember ancient saying: "Man who cling to 'mental torment' have much trouble enjoying Wheel of Fortune."

I say no, I have parkinson's diseaes which is said to lead later to dimentia. It is progressing. I'm on medication which I take everyday. It keeps my mind occupied and sometimes the physical symphtoms affect my games. Sometimes the muscle spasms and hands shaking affects my games but I don't let it bother me. The moves, tactics, and strategy keep me going, It hasn't been no picnic and I have my good days and bad. I just keep playing win or lose. I'm still trying to improve my playing. I still read and study and try to learn all that I can. Whatever you do. Don't stop playing. It's good for the brain.

Well, hot damn -- good for you, man!  Hope you're also able to take some time to "while away the hours, conferring with the flowers, consulting with the rain ...." (Remember how many times the supposedly "brainless" Tinman came up with the good plans?  I loved the subleties in the story-- the things kids didn't need to pick up on in order to enjoy the movie!)

DrSpudnik

Who rang that bell?!

Sorry, doesn't ring a bell.

Great example of all that lovely "Emerald City" nonsense -- along with "that Horse of a Different Color you've heard about" and --not in the movie but in the book -- the rule that everyone had to wear green spectacles in order to see the city as "Emerald."

In the film, of course, Frank Morgan (above) played the Wizard, the Guard, the Doorman, the Cabbie, and Professor Marvel -- I doubt little kids even noticed.

DrSpudnik

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!

I use that quote every election cycle.

Right!  And the necessity for green spectacles to "see" what the "Wizard" says is "real" -- perfect political metaphor!

(Hey, maybe it's Not that chess is "bad for my brain!"   --- Maybe my "brain for chess" is only "bad" because my "Brain for Other Things" is Brilliant!!  ... I Like it!  I'm going to wear these green spectacles whenever I look in a mirror from now on. Cool )

DrSpudnik

I'll make a green spectacle of myself!

Oh, I just saw this picture -- wonderful!  And it sounds like you're paraphrasing Sherrif Bart reproving Lily von Schtupp in Blazing Saddles, when she falls madly in love with him -- "Please....!  You're making a German spectacle of yourself!"

P.S.  Does it mean "chess has turned your brain 'bad '" when you notice you've spent most of your life memorizing lines from Mel Brooks' movies?

DrSpudnik

It could be worse; you could be citing hip hop verse.

DrSpudnik

It could be worse. It could be raining.

HashtagFlawless

Chess has made my life, but it also ruined my life. It's harmful for my brain, too, because it gives me headaches and makes me lose brain cells.

DrSpudnik

We'll help you find them. Did you look under the couch?
