It cost a ton of money to have them .... I don't know the shape of S. Africa's economy but unless they have a very strong one .... they will wind up in the hole .... and pay it out for years ... is it worth that ... who knows
Is South Africa capable of hosting the Olympic Games successfully?
Holding the Olympics in a new city every event is a great deal for the Olympic Committee. They get brand new facilities every two years built to their specifications. But it's difficult for a three week event to be profitable. Personally I would not want my city to host an Olympics and we already have great facilities to build upon for the Summer Olympics.
Hi Nine! I guess the answer is no. You need a really strong economy for that and it is not likely to be very profitable.
Certainly they couldn't mess it up more than Russia did with the Winter Olympics... Brown water, concrete rubble in the hotel lobby, tiny beds... Yup, Sochi was an excellent choice to host, alright! I was surprised when, after that much publicized fiasco, that they were again chosen to host another event, the chess championship.
South Africa would be hard pressed to do a worse job hosting. They'll probably do just fine, as long as they make the proper preparations (which Sochi didn't).
Opinions are welcome. This forum is leaning towards a debate. Anyone is welcome to join in and have fun. Please remember that this all about opinion. Facts will be given, but it is your opinion if you think South Africa is capable.
I'm against the idea of South Africa hosting the olympic games. Why? South Africa already has some trouble financially, the olympics will just bring in more debt. Nagano held the 1998 olympics. They are still paying off the debt, hopefully they will be able to pay off their debt this year.
Any one else?
