I don't know what style you want to play but here are some things to consider. If you want to play a lot of blues you might want to consider switching from single-coil pickups to humbuckers. They give a fuller, fatter tone that seems to work well with the blues. Semi-hollow body guitars with humbuckers are even more so. They also , IMHO, give a better crunch when distorted than a solid body guitar. That's just personal preference, though. As a rule, the heavier the guitar body the longer it will sustain a note. (Might not be a big deal with all the effects these days.)
