magic the gathering..
I play. I don't see it going away anytime soon. People have shown that they are willing to pay ridiculous amounts of money for little pieces of cardboard. While I'm sure wizards is just as greedy as most big companies, it's the players and the secondary market that decides the value of cards. Its simple supply and demand. If we said we aren't paying X price for X card, sellers would have no choice but to lower prices. I think there's an estimated 20 million people worldwide that play, it would be more if it was cheaper to play.

If you wanted a shivan dragon you would buy a pack of revised and hope you get one. Card collecting was part of the game.
it's odd because the fact that you can get a really expensive card in a set makes the pack prices go really high. That never happened with basketball cards. there were always really rare cards in the set but packs still cost retail prices
People still collect magic cards. That's the main reason wizards has that stupid reserved list. You can't really compare magic with sports cards, all you can really do with sports cards is collect. You can win a lot of money by winning mtg tournaments. I'm glad that cards are easily accessible now (if you have the money) buying packs hoping to pull one specific card gets real expensive real quick. Several months ago there was a guy in my local card shop buying packs of modern masters trying to get a tarmogoyf, packs were 10 bucks a piece and he ripped open a good 15 packs, no tarmogoyf. I was telling him the whole time, dude just go online and order a goyf. He replied, no I don't wanna pay 150 bucks for one card! Well after spending close to 150 on a bunch of packs, and only getting like 60 bucks of card value out of those packs, he left broke and mad that he didn't get the card he wanted. 5 minutes after he left I bought one pack and got a tarmogoyf..... BOOM!
