William James said: "The deepest principle in human nature is the craving to be appreciated." He didn't speak, mind you, of the "wish" or the "desire" or the "longing" to be appreciated. He said the "craving" to be appreciated.

Very true.. but only for those who feel that need ! For many people, the craving to be wanted, appreciated is far down on their list. It might be said "secretly" they are seeking appreciation. To some extend it might be true. But I think the statement as the deepest principle is too broad a depiction of human nature and fails.

DeepFlight12

Can't argue power. For you it is true to a large extent. What I'm saying is, its not true for everyone as their "deepest principle" . Human nature takes many forms. Vastly differing priorities, things that motivate us.

DeepFlight12

There are alot of people in this world who dedicate their lives to helping others. They do not seek appreciation in return. Their reward comes from within themselves. Appreciation from others is not the "deepest principle" that guides them. On the other end of the spectrum, some people only seek monetary wealth. They'll step on anybody to get it. Care less about being appreciated.

With today's technology, there may be a way to do a IQ test....postmortem. Ahhh, pass the ketchup ?....pleez ?

Note: I've hearda people eating cowbrain w/ scrambled eggs. I could see why they should....the way they run drunk down the streets of Pamplona.

shadowcat53

What if we just eat rich people..

DeepFlight12

And what does a zoologist see, exactly? He sees the perfect, natural sense of cannibalism, the evolutionary biology of eating one's own kind and, oddly, the wonder of it all. Macabre summaries of men eating men are present, too, but by far the most interesting section on human cannibalism in the book is Schutt's description of the long history of European aristocrats eating human parts as medicine.

"Upper-class types and even members of the British Royalty 'applied, drink or wore' concoctions prepared from human body parts, and they continued to do so until the end of the 18th century," Schutt writes in the book.

DeepFlight12

Bill Schutt's newest book, Cannibalism: A Perfectly Natural History, reveals that from a scientific perspective, there's a predictable calculus for when humans and animals go cannibal. And far more humans — and animals — have dipped into the world of cannibalism than you might have imagined.

I wonder about the evolutionists....u know, eating their ancestors ?...lol !!

DeepFlight12

We'll have to ask Elroch!

The_Ghostess_Lola

All chimps & gorillas & orangutans are full-on vegans. So maybe we can start by asking Elstone why we eat meat & cannabalize if our so-called ancestors wouldn't touch it.

Someone help me figure out where the bridge is...Tongue Out....

DeepFlight12

Drought. The land dried up.

Prisoners held in captivity resort to eating bugs.

The_Ghostess_Lola

I guess. Chimps resort to a single-o chopstick by sticking it down a ant hole....they say.

I'm getting tired. It's been a long day & I bought a bottle of white wine & had two glasses so it's sleepytime for me. Have a good nite DP12....Smile....

The Triple Nine Society measures how well your brain 'clicks'. Ppl will poopoo this, but it's a yardstick for cognition & cognition is just how everyone, in general, sees smarts....by today's standards !

Being smart is noticed right away by others. Almost like if u had makeup on or not. It's 'cuz it's attractive....'cuz if u attach yourself to someone smart, it's probably gonna help you !

And something else. If you're intelligent you're gonna get privileges.  And membership of the Triple Nine Society has its privileges !

shadowcat53

What if I don't know nuthing.....and waht are privillages ...

If u put a newborn in a black box & fed it for 10 years, it probably would know nothing. It would have innate stuff in its head, but that tells you the power of learning from your surroundings. Still, if u took two children & brought them up - same everything, one would probably end up smarter. So that bodes well for natural talent and whatchu inherit for brains. And something else. Children don't have a right to be smart 'cuz their parents are....it's privilege.

And BTW, someone could stop & wish me a Happy Mother's Day....but that would be misleading.
