mediated meditations

It seems we're always with some electronic media, whether it's in front of us on a computer screen, in our ears from a portable device, from television or a movie theater, some sort of radio, or mobile phone. How do all these electronics affect our sense of community? For example, if you sign up online to receive an electronic newsletter in your e-mail, are you participating in a community? It seems to me you are. What do you think?

Aren't we participating in a community here, loved?

Our community here is entirely online, or almost entirely online. We have a wide variety of what people are doing here. For some of us, participation means to play chess in live games of 15 minutes, maybe with a few seconds added with each move. Some here are relaxing by playing casual nonrated games, by posting comments in forums, or what have you. Some are probably interested only in improving their chess playing ability. It's an interesting mix not only because typically the internet is where productivity goes to die but also because here it seems people are trying to accomplish something, whether it's a higher rating or whatever. But offline, electronics generally come with the exectation of increased productivity. With changes in expectations like that, we'll make modifications to expectations of productivity, among other things, maybe. That's how it seems to me anyway.
