Miracle Bowling Finish

     Last year about this time Tom Smallwood was laid off his job at an automaker
in Detroit, today he just finished an unlikely journey culminating in a victory in
the first of the PBA's four Majors of the year.
     After losing his job he spoke to his wife about pursuing his dream of bowling
at the highest level, but little did he know he would come to the tenth frame
needing a strike to defeat the reigning PBA Bowler Of The Year himself, The
Big Nasty Wes Malott.
     While The Big Nasty stands at 6'5" and weighs 250 and is known for intimidating his opponents with crushing strikes, the 5'6" Smallwood had never
won an event, much less a highly coveted Major.  He calmly stepped up in the
tenth and the strike was never in doubt, and he pocketed $50,000 and the
trophy of a lifetime.
     After winning, Smallwood went over and gave his wife a kiss, a perfect
ending to a fairytale story for a man and the town of Detroit and the country
of America, where a recession has continued to take its toll, what a Christmas
story.
