I was not aware of this..........
So, it's not so private after all........
How many and who is the Moderators? Do they belong in teams and groups as well, in that case it is on the wrong side of fair. Beside of that, personally I don't mind some ninjas reading our more private comments, as I mostly focus on chess and not too much on personal stuff anyway...
Moderators are normally benevole ( people that help out on their own free time ) people, that one come's across on live chess, to help those that need help, & correct or warn those that step out of line, ie...use of bad language, ....if one does not know how to set up a challenge...etc, yo!
I don't really care if they want to read my dull conversations. Thats their jobs as chess.com gave it to them. I guess it falls under that scope of Moderation. But you could ask Erik or the staff and see what they tell you about it. I'm not going to waste any anger or indignation on this as it would serve no purpose. If the staff has delegated that to the moderators, so be it. It doesn't really make a difference if it's the staff or the moderators reading it, either way it's not private, when someone can read it anytime they wish.... As you stated when you said you thought only the staff had that power.
Terry ( knightspawn5)
I'm with you Terry, but I do know some Mods that are under 18, young kids if you want, I don't think that it would be suitable for a kid to understand when some adults are talking hard, about suicide, joking, about ordinary things in life, sex, religion,..........etc.
I respect the Staff, but not any Joe soap, that can spy on my interlude & then maybe turn it against me, against my will for their profit, yo!
are you talkin in general, they can read convos or in groups, or live chess? i knew the staff could read anything, but i've not heard of anyone else having the ability.
In the first place, why are kids made moderators of hangouts frequented by adults? Especially knowing that live chess can be a hairy hoary experience with its live talk. Other than live chess, I don't think even staff should read chat in private games, the only exception being if there's a complaint by either of the 2 players. Or private messages.
We didn't totally surrender our expectations of privacy when we become members of this site, which is a really great site. There are rules to be enforced, accepted, but privacy must still be respected. Unless there is a complaint.
I was unaware moderators where people other than staff. I've recruited two RL friends here because we like playing online chess. I don't mind staff reading conversations (they have my credit card after all), but I guess I will no longer be recruiting friends here since child moderators can read when I'm telling a friend my plans for tonight.
thegab03, before you start spreading rumours, could you please try to be more specific in order to avoid mere misunderstandings?
I have had the impression that you maybe are trying to talk about what you have gotten to know as moderators in Live Chess only, aren' t you?
And you do know that most of the "bad language" checks in Live Chess is being done simply by an automated word recognition, not by poor human beings who would have to read through tons of game chat lines ..., don't you?
Karl, I know what kind of moderation is being done in live main chat.
However, the topic of this thread seems to be moderating game chats, not live main chat.
I never use Live Chat, so I can't comment on that at all. But are you sure that the staff would entrust such responsibility to a minor? I don't have a problem with the staff recruiting extra help as they can't be in all places at all times, but I have to believe that they are very selective as to who they give this power to.
I have seen the main chat get way out of control when no mod is present. And on more than one occasion.
And that is obviously why the Staff have recruited some volunteer moderators to help pick up the slack. I can't say with 100% certainty cuz I'm not a staff member (and I NEVER play Live Chess), but from everything I've seen on this site over the last 2 and a half years, I have to believe that the staff are very selective in choosing moderators, and I have never heard of a single abuse of power being reported by anyone. To be honest, this just sounds like unfounded Big Brother Paranoia.
Karl, just read what I wrote above: My main request is for thegab03 to be more specific in order to avoid misunderstandings. I have the impression that he is referring to a very special and narrow area (maybe only human live chess moderators. Maybe he has even simply only mixed up automated moderation in private chats with human interference), and I am not even sure if the "information" he is referring to is reliable.
What he says is simply not true if it is not restricted to the specific area he may be intending to talk about. I know of many moderators in many areas here who have in no way any access to any private chats.

1 It's not a rumor, it's a fact, obviosly known to very few people bar staff & Mods.
2 Yes & no.
3 Yes & no, yo!
Please remember that there will be different groups of mods in different areas. Most people who are moderators for live chess main chat will not be mods for the Forums here, for example.
I do not think discussions make sense here as long as they generalize when differentiation and solid information basis is necessary instead.
thegab03, your formatting seems to be stuck to bold face and italics. Is that correlated with a wish to be shouting around instead of providing useful and differentiated information as requested?

If you look at all my posts, they are written in the same manner, nothing to do with what you are deviously suggesting, if my manner of writing disturbs you, then just bypass it bro, yo!
I agree that sometimes it makes sense to simply "bypass" what is written by someone who is stuck to bold face and italics text. (In a similar way as with some people who seem to be constantly shouting instead of talking reasonably.)
And I acknowledge with respect that you seem to agree on this even when applied to this case here. I guess we might start to do so now.
I would like to ask yous all, what do yous think about.... that the Moderators have the right to read what we write in our on going games? whether we like it or not, which I thought up till now, that only staff had the power to do so, I know that it's a private site, but this is a wee bit too much privacy being indulged, yo!
