nirvana & meditation
I am certainly no authority; however, I believe Till is describing one form of meditation. I think there are several. I don't know more about this topic than I know about chess, so be forewarned. Guided meditation typically calls for your listening to audio of someone stroking your, ahem, ego. They may speak to you about relaxing your mind and body. They may tell you that magic energy is being infused into you, and that you can conquer the universe. I practice it on a regular basis. You are thinking during this type of meditation.
Well, I know my "self" exists, so the pursuit of a "pure self" or "transcendental ego" is perhaps an intellectual endeavor for philosophers trying to find some kind of presuppositionless supposition upon which to ground their inquiries?:)
there once was a bloke named tom
who chatted a babe at the prom
she said "hi who are you?"
but tom hadn't a clue
so she ate her chips and went om nom nom nom.
That sounds a bit like hypnosis to me . I find it hard to believe that you could be particularly conscious of anything while listening to someone rabbiting on in your ear .
I'm sure it's relaxing though and if it's useful great .
It amuses me to see that you took such care to make it clear you were trolling me . Don't worry people are very clear about it !
You're smarter than I but I'll try to keep up .
I'm thinking this idea of a true self to me is about being entirely separate from outside influence. So not a conditioned self . Nor even perhaps a self related to physical needs .
It's a beautiful idea .
I think of the need to be loved . What's that all about ?
You say you know that you have a self . I get that but unless you can be sure that this self you know of is in a real way you , and not but a reaction to things , then to me at least you can't be sure you're in control .
I do tend to believe that truth exists . A bit like what you said about there is a true time . When I talked of special relativity affecting time .
I suppose it's true that we people are capable of knowing this truth .
Perhaps that can give us a type of freedom .
The truth shall set you free !
Trysts you are a beautiful value to these threads and it's always a delightful pleasure to hear from you .
Thank you
I'm tired of thinking about thinking . It's overrated lets get another drink in . Watch me come undone
Peace and wisdom ?
See the thing is , doesn't the knowledge have to be able to be put into thought to be of use throughout your daily life .
How can something aid you if you can't grasp or mentally ?
At least you've stuck your neck out and have an idea of what can be known .
A lot of times I hear this the truth can't be put into words and that's just nonsense to me .
That sounds a bit like hypnosis to me . I find it hard to believe that you could be particularly conscious of anything while listening to someone rabbiting on in your ear .
I'm sure it's relaxing though and if it's useful great .
Try it. You'll be surprised. Nothing like hypnosis.
the benefits of having no thoughts is that you no longer need to function in the world. you can grab a big daisy and float off into the depths of the milky way.
Tom it is not my problem when you get frustrated. I and many others told you already like 100 times what the purpose of meditation and having no thoughts is, especially in your other threads... Although you are very friendly it seems to me that you don´t even try to understand what others tell you. For example what I said earlier was that in eastern philosophy the mind is not seen as yourself. You rather use it as a tool which you can "turn on" if you want to put it like this. Because most people can not stop thinking even if they try (which is also the reason why meditating is not as easy as one might thing) their mind controls them because it constantly puts thoughts in their consciousness. In that moment where you realize your thoughts they disappear and you reach a higher form of consciousness. This state of consciousness is in old eastern philosophy called "enlightenment". It´s a state of pure self and being in the moment.
By the way what Chicken_Monster said is also very correct, I just googled meditation and there are indeed several "types" of meditation. Maybe you could just read the wikipedia article yourself ;).
Cat hawking is getting there .
I like his assertion that a natural force such as gravity creates matter . That makes a whole hell of a lot of sense to me . Like he said in the paragraph i read people have made extraordinary advances in terms of understanding and what's to say one day we won't understand what we are and how we are here .
I'm sure some people won't be willing to hear the truth but I will .
I'll catch up with the other post later . Till I'm grateful and I'm enjoying you. I'm just being honest buddy but liking your style . I'll write you later . Thank you
