I agree actually pulp . Einstein said something similar . That the absence of free will doesn't mean it's less important to be caring . The opposite is true .

Well, I see you guys are at it again.  Haven't you heard, "Nivana is not attained by thinking about it, the Buddha is not met with words".  Here is where the Zen master's stick crashes on your shoulder.

Tom is "on today"

1st we learn we have the choice to either go on a killing spree or immigrate to the Bahamas.

2nd we get tom agreeing with Einstein that free will doesn't exist.

The pure insight! The brilliant analagy! Let's here more !

Meditation is the focussing of the mind on inner thoughts and mindfulness to the benefit of the individual. Nirvana is a rock band.

Concentration is the focusing of the mind...

It seems there are two types of meditation? And both types are for leaving the world of clocks and becoming more aware of the present, I believe. One is for intellectual endeavors and the other is for bodily attunement. At least that's how I've understood it:)

There is only one type of meditation.

I've read a bit about that notion of meditation too, mdinnerspace, but reaching a state where no thought exists sounds more like being unconscious to me

That is because you have not experienced it.  It is far from unconscious.

One type, different vehicles

Trysts at ten . I see your point . Like a person intensely watching for a butterfly to hatch maybe .

I guess what I'm thinking about is a person doing extremely complex mathematics . Or a better example , that guy that played paceman for twenty four hours .

I suppose this type of intense concentration could be described as meditation .

How many times do you need to hear NO!  Go to your room.

I'm sure there's a self when I'm in a hurry to take a dump in the morning. Sorry for being so crude, but I think this sums up my point of view on the matter.

I think the self is not the matter in the intestinal tract looking for the exit

some believe there is no self. it is only a construct of the mind. what matters is how we construct ourself i suppose.

Very Buddhist.  But what is mind?

Here it is over and over :

I guess

I suppose

Btw... tom is in his room, in the closet in fact.

I thought everyone knew that nirvana is a state of bliss...Cobain seemed to miss this point, and for that I feel sorry. As for meditation, it does not always equate with having no thought. There exists both guided and unguided meditation. I thought I explained that in a previous thread. Meditation should not be equated with nirvana.

There is guided and unguided concentration.  Meditation's end result is Nirvana.

But you know trysts whether or not this true self exists is something I wonder too . How can we be certain of free will if we can't be certain of a true self ?

Neither free will nor a true self are real.

Kay do you know who you are ? Lately it seems all you are is an image you are trying to project . Everything is done for approval . Buddy what does it matter what people on the threads think of you . You don't even show who you are anyway . Never talk of how you feel or what you hold to be of importance . That's your choice of course I'm just finding you a little wearing . I just think you are so quick to criticise who other people are but you aren't showing yourself at all . That's a bit cowardly no ?

When Kaynight arrives, think humor.  He reveals himself nicely.
