Ever hear of Landau?

He placed 2nd behind Reti at the Hague 1927, 2nd behind Euwe at Amsterdam, and took 1st place at Rotterdam 1931 ahead of Rubinstein, Tartakower and Colle.

In 1942 he was arrested by the Gestapo and sent to Graditz (Silesia) concentration camp, where he died in March 1944. Later the same year, his wife and young daughter were gassed to death at Auschwitz.

Przepiorka was another well-known chess master executed by the Nazis, in his case for playing chess (the game was forbidden to Jews).

Vera Menchik (seven times Women's World Chess Champion) was killed by a V-1 flying bomb in 1944. She was the reigning WWCC at the time.

At least four well known chess masters and problem composers died in the Siege of Leningrad.
