Ben Franklin was a business genius. He invented franchising. He would equip printing shops throughout the colonies, and split the profits with the local printer who did all the work. He made so much money he didn't need to patent any of his inventions. He let others use them free of charge.

I (and Kant) am sure that honestly is the best policy.
But how do we know whether we are being honest?
if you admit you don't really know, you're probably being honest

We don't. We have to trust them,if they betray that trust, they are traitors. We cut off their heads and display them on a spike in the town square. This encourages honesty in the rest of the community.

Actually exposing them as lying scumbags and jerkwads should be enough with out all that bloodshed and Halloween happiness.

honesty is speakingand acting in line with the truth
So how do you handle the question from the wife or girlfriend "does my butt look big in this dress?" Be honest because this what this thread is all about.

Answer tactfully which is honesty in family dress

Just tell her "I like big butts and I cannot lie!"
You know what Wolfbird even though that would be the truth it would make for a miserable few days.

Honesty, is, as was said, and I concur even now; accepting the fact that rather than an equal contract with the world (you have free will), you obey a law (of freedom, of nature)

i dont think good and evil is an unconscious act not made in time as levinas and also kant seem to say. i think they mean its not a conscious choice, as in an on/off switch. i think anyone can be good if they convince themselves, through repeated practice (habit = ethos = ethics) that they are dominated by a law

because as hobbes said we all start off evil. because we naturally (? - post-renunciation?) try to dominate. but admit we cant and move on, figuring on how to best live our lives.
it's all we can do :)

Possibly in one's upbringing one must be taught as to exactly what is right and what is wrong ; taught what is good and what is bad; taught what is considered honesty and considered dishonesty, etc.
[ ie: How would one know if stealing food is dishonest if one has no food and has been taught/ told to steal food to survive ?]
Note: The Ten commandments is not everybody's frame of reference throughout the world.
Ben Franklin is credited with saying "Honesty is the best policy". Pesonally I think it works out for the best eveytime no matter how much it hurts.
