Here’s the essay.
Dogs today may live with humans, but they still keep instincts from their wild ancestors. Even though dogs and wolves may be different and have totally different characteristics, one thing is true: dogs still keep some traces despite millenia of domestication.
According to The Wolf Among Us, all dogs are descended from wolves, and this is clear in their behaviour. Just like the wild wolf, today’s dogs still exhibit many similar behaviours. For example, a dog can be seen spinning around for no clear reason. That is because their ancestors, the wolf, are also known to spin in a circle to get anything, including insects and debris, out before lying down to rest.
Another way dogs show wolf instincts is through communication and survival behaviours. In legends, wolves are known to howl at full moons - except that they aren’t. They are actually howling at the sky to share information with their comrades or keep predators out. While domestic dogs may not howl like their ancestors, they may still bark to get attention from their owners or warn of danger.
Wolves survive by working in packs, and dogs still show this instinct today. Alone, a wolf can hunt small prey such as a hare. However, they are shown to be more coherent and efficient when in a pack. These hunters have been found to be able to take down larger prey, such as deer, with their comrades. However, today’s dogs no longer need to hunt down a hare for lunch, however, they do live alongside their human “pack”.
