you've been tasked with writing an essay for a class assignment, the project might seem daunting. However, your assignment doesn't have to be a hair-pulling, frazzled all-nighter. Think of writing an essay as if you were making a hamburger. Imagine the parts of a burger: There's a bun (bread) on top and a bun on the bottom. In the middle, you'll find the meat. Your introduction is like the top bun announcing the subject, your supporting paragraphs are the beef in the middle, and your conclusion is the bottom bun, supporting everything. The condiments would be the specific examples and illustrations that can help to clarify key points and keep your writing interesting. (Who, after all, would eat a burger composed only of bread and beef?) Each part needs to be present: A soggy or missing bun would cause your fingers to slip immediately into the beef without being able to hold and enjoy the burger. But if your burger had no beef in the middle, you'd be left with two dry pieces of bread. Your introductory paragraphs introduce the reader to your topic. For example, you might choose to write an essay titled, "Technology Is Changing Our Lives." Start your introduction with a hook that captures the reader's attention: "Technology is taking over our lives and changing the world." After you introduce your topic and draw the reader in, the most important part of your introductory paragraph(s) would be you the main idea, or thesis. "The Little Seagull Handbook" calls this a statement that introduces your main point, identifying your topic. Your thesis statement could read: "Information technology has revolutionized the way we work." But, your topic can be more varied and may cover seemingly mundane subjects, such as this opening paragraph from Mary Zeigler's "How to Catch River Crabs." Zeigler grabs the reader's attention from the first sentence: "As a lifelong crabber (that is, one who catches crabs, not a chronic complainer), I can tell you that anyone who has patience and a great love for the river is qualified to join the ranks of crabbers." The final sentences of your introduction, then, would be a mini-outline of what your essay will cover. Don't use an outline form, but explain briefly all the key points you intend to discuss in narrative form. Extending the hamburger essay theme, the supporting paragraphs would be beef. These would include well-researched and logical points that support your thesis. The topic sentence of each paragraph might serve as the reference points of your mini-outline. The topic sentence, which is often at the beginning of a paragraph, states or suggests the main idea (or topic) of a paragraph. Bellevue College in Washington state shows how to write four different supporting paragraphs on four different topics: a description of a beautiful day; savings and loan and bank failures; the writer's father; and, the writer's joke-playing cousin. Bellevue explains that your supporting paragraphs should provide rich, vivid imagery, or logical and specific supporting details, depending on your topic. A perfect supporting paragraph for the technology topic, discussed previously, could draw on current events. In its Jan. 20-21, 2018, weekend edition, "The Wall Street Journal" ran an article titled, "Digital Revolution Upends Ad Industry: A Divide Between Old Guard and New Tech Hires." The article described in searing detail, how one of the world's biggest ad agencies lost a major Mcdonald's advertising account to a relative upstart because the fast-food chain felt the older agency "was not adept enough at using data to quickly produce online ads and target minute slices of its customer base." The younger, hipper, agency, by contrast, had worked with Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc's Google to assemble a team of data experts. You could use this news story to illustrate how technology—and a need for workers who understand it and are able to use it—is taking over the world and is changing entire industries. Just as a hamburger needs a durable bottom bun to contain all the ingredients inside, your essay needs a strong conclusion to support and buttress your points. You can also think of it as the closing argument a prosecutor might make in a criminal court case. The closing arguments section of a trial takes place when the prosecution attempts to strengthen the evidence she presented to the jury. Even though the prosecutor likely provided solid and compelling arguments and evidence during the trial, it isn't until the closing arguments that she ties it all together. In the same way, you'll restate your main points in the conclusion in reverse order of how you listed them in your introduction. Some sources call this an upside-down triangle: The intro was a triangle that was right-side up, where you started with a short, razor sharp point—your hook—which then fanned out slightly to your topic sentence and broadened further with your mini-outline. The conclusion, by contrast, is an upside-down triangle that starts by broadly reviewing the evidence—the points you made in your supporting paragraphs—and then narrows to your topic sentence and a restatement of your hook. In this way, you've logically explained your points, restated your main idea, and left readers with a zinger that hopefully convinces them of your point of view. Bullock, Richard. "The Little Seagull Handbook with Exercises." Michal Brody, Francine Weinberg, Third edition, W. W. Norton & Company, December 22, 2016. The Yangtze River–officially, the third-longest river in the world–generates almost a quarter of China’s GDP. More people live along its banks than live in the United States (roughly one in every 18 people on Earth). And almost all of it has been transformed by the Three Gorges dam, the largest dam in history and a massive source of electricity for the growing country. Entire towns now lie submerged underneath the river’s new banks, and over a million people have been displaced. The river is thus a symbol of China’s modern face, built upon its most legendary waterway, which makes it a superb subject for photographer Nadav Kander‘s series, Yangtze: The Long River.Beginning in 2006, the same year that Three Gorges construction began, the Israel-born, London-based Kander traveled the river from its mouth to its source five times, capturing scenes from its banks that frame the Yangtze as a catalyst of change, growth, and massive environmental risk. “Demolition and construction were everywhere on such a scale that I was unsure if what I was seeing was being built or destroyed, destroyed or built,” Kander remembers. Tiny figures hang their laundry below massive bridge pylons. A man watches the construction of a city of 7 million, rising in just five years. Other scenes show fishermen, and families playing cards along its banks. His subjects are ant-like, confronted with the massiveness of the river and the rising infrastructure around it.Kander compares himself to great sublime landscape painters like Casper David Friedrich, who depicted tiny figures lost in the ferocity of nature. But rather than cowering before the elements, Kander’s subjects quail before “the might of China,” and more specifically, the state. He minces few words about the subtext of the photos, which he believes are warnings of environmental and cultural crises ahead. “China is a nation that appears to be severing its roots by destroying its past in the wake of the sheer force of its moving ‘forward’ at such an astounding and unnatural pace,” he writes. “A people scarring their country, and a country scarring its people.” Only last week, the river turned a shocking shade of beet red, a hue that has yet to be explained by experts. The Long River has won some of photography’s most prestigious awards, and next month it will make its debut in New York at Flowers Gallery. Ironically, though only five years have passed since the images were shot, they depict landscapes that have since changed drastically. “They really do feel like pictures that can never be taken again,” the photographer says. A 500-word essay is approximately one page single-spaced, or two pages double-spaced. This approximation assumes a common, 12-point font with 1-inch margins on standard printing paper. The three most important structural factors in determining the word count per page are the font, font size and margins. The letters of different fonts have different widths, as well as different widths of space between letters, punctuations and words. The size of each font is typically adjustable within a wide range. The measurements of the margins determine how far within the physical borders of the page that type may appears. Additionally, the total number of words per page is affected by genres and styles of writing, some of which require repeated use of polysyllabic, technical vocabularies. A personal essay is a short work of autobiographical nonfiction characterized by a sense of intimacy and a conversational manner. Also called a personal statement. A type of creative nonfiction, the personal essay is "all over the map," according to Annie Dillard. "There's nothing you can't do with it. No subject matter is forbidden, no structure is prescribed. You get to make up your own form every time."("To Fashion a Text," 1998). The personal essay is one of the most common types of writing assignment--and not only in freshman composition courses. Many employers, as well as graduate and professional schools, will ask you to submit a personal essay (sometimes called a personal statement) before even considering you for an interview. Being able to compose a coherent version of yourself in words is clearly an important skill. What qualities does a personal essay reveal about you? Here are just a few:Communication SkillsHow effective are your communication skills? Do you write clearly, concisely, and correctly? Note that many employers put communication skills at the top of the list of essential qualifications.Critical Thinking SkillsHow fresh and imaginative are you in your thinking? Is your writing cluttered with cliches, or is it obvious that you have original ideas to contribute?MaturityWhat specific lessons have you learned from experience, and are you ready to apply those lessons to the job or the academic program you're considering? Keep in mind that it's not enough to be able to recount a personal experience; you should be prepared to interpret it as well.Self and Subject in Personal Essays"[W]here the familiar essay is characterized by its everyday subject matter, the personal essay is defined more by the personality of its writer, which takes precedence over the subject. On the other hand, the personal essayist does not place himself firmly in center stage, as does the autobiographical essayist; the autobiographical element of the personal essay is far less calculated..."The Essayist's Persona"Personal essayists from Montaigne on have been fascinated with the changeableness and plasticity of the materials of human personality. Starting with self-description, they have realized they can never render all at once the entire complexity of a personality. So they have elected to follow an additive strategy, offering incomplete shards, one mask or persona after another: the eager, skeptical, amiable, tender, curmudgeonly, antic, somber. If 'we must remove the mask,' it is only to substitute another mask..."The "Antigenre": An Alternative to Academic Prose"[T]he more personal essay offers an escape from the confines of academic prose. By using this antigenre form that in contemporary essays embodies multiple kinds of writing, many essayists in search of democracy find a freedom for expressing in their writings spontaneity, self-reflexivity, accessibility, and a rhetoric of sincerity."Teaching the Personal Essay"Given the opportunity to speak their own authority as writers, given a turn in the conversation, students can claim their stories as primary source material and transform their experiences into evidence..."Essay Forms"Despite the anthologists' custom of presenting essays as 'models of organization,' it is the loose structure or apparent shapelessness of the essay that is often stressed in standard definitions. . . . Samuel Johnson famously defined the essay as 'an irregular, indigested piece, not a regular and orderly performance.' And certainly, a number of essayists (Hazlitt and Emerson, for instance, after the fashion of Montaigne) are readily identifiable by the wayward or fragmentary nature of their explorations. Yet each of these writers observes certain distinctive organizing (or disorganizing) principles of his own, thus charting the ramble and shaping the form. As Jeanette Harris observes in Expressive Discourse, 'Even in the case of a personal essay, which may appear informal and loosely structured, the writer has crafted with care this very appearance of informality' (122). Tell them the gross stuff about the opposite sex and exaggerate it
Until they get older (16/17ish) most kids will be grossed out by the umm… bodily functions of the opposite sex. If you keep putting this in their head it may be able to keep them grossed out of talking or being around the opposite sex until they are near adulthood.
Keep them away from the opposite sex
The less your child is around the opposite sex the less they will think about them. You can put them in an all boys/girls class or even homeschool them. You should notice the desired effects in one to two months. Make sure to take away their social media too, as tons of content flows through it, and if your child sees images of the opposite sex on social media it defeats the purpose. If they have a sibling of the opposite sex make them dress modestly and vice versa.
Have them focus on a hobby
There’s no better way to take your child’s mind off of something than to give them a hobby to focus on. For example, have them learn how to play chess. It’s easy to learn but hard to master, and the time that they will spend thinking about chess will reduce the time they will spend thinking about or being with the opposite sex.
✂️✂️
Ok, although this method has a 100 percent efficiency rate this is a last resort if the first three methods don’t work, as it’s kind of permanent. Do everything you can with the first three methods before committing to this one, as once you do this to your child it can’t be undone.
