I like Pokemon too. I stopped watching the show after Sinnoh region ended though. I felt like the Pokemon changed too much for me after that and I didn't like the changing types of already discovered Pokemon like making the Normal-type Jigglypuff part Fairy. It changes the type-trumping and I don't like that. I might even be okay with Fairy-type and others if it only applied to "newly discovered" Pokemon, but not for ones already found. 

I saw snippets here and there of some newer episodes. Some things are cool. I like some of the region layout concepts and character designs, but I guess it just changed too much for me. Sinnoh was my favorite region, but Season 1 Pokemon was really well-written too

You can believe this. You don't have to enjoy every single hobby others may enjoy. You could say the same about chess, or listening to music or any other form of entertainment. 

It might not always be "productive" with something, but it is enjoyable and this makes it time well spent. It reminds me of a famous line from the movie Dead Poets Society:

"...medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for."
