For a beginner I would recommend Mark Jeays' simple solution. As for speed you should go for the Friedrich metod but to use that one you have to memorize a lot of algorithms. That is not the case with Jeays'.

And like others have said. Get yourself a DIY cube and lube it. You can also use fine sandpaper before you lube your cube :D But don't overdo it, because then it will be no good.

SO WAIT THERE ARE METHODS TO SOLVING THIS THING, I'VE HAD ONE FOR ABOUT A MONTH, SPENT MAYBE 15 MINUTES AT A TIME PLAYING WITH IT I CAN GET ONE COLOR IN LIKE 20 SEC, BUT AFTER THAT I GET FUSTRATED TRYING TO GET THE SIDES TO MATCH UP...I WILL LOOK INTO THIS ON THE NET.

I'm rather horrible at solving the cube but my uncle can do it in 30 seconds or so.  I think the world record is 19 seconds! NO LIFE

Back when I was about 12 (late 80s), I used to solve them in an average time of about 1 minute, with my best time being 48 seconds. I had a strange solution that I learned off the sheet that came with the cube: You placed the white corners first, ,then the yellow corners (opposite colour). Then you flipped the yellow corners so they were facing the right way, then placed the edges in place, flipped them around, then did the centres. Not the fastest way I'm guessing, but back then it was all I had. Now I doubt I'd have the patience to learn a new way. I think I can still do a cube in about 90 seconds though.

I juggled two cubes behind my back at once while blindfolded and solved them both in 45 seconds! That day it rained muffins and a hamburger ate me afterwards so I don't think I will be able to duplicate it.

Did the ground dissolve into money and rabid rabbits scratch people eyes out before serving them dinner at a fancy resteraunt? Because if so, I think I remember that day. It was in the 80's, wasn't it?

I've been cubing for 2 months now.  I use the Petrus Method (2x2x2 corner to 2x2x3 to solved cube).  My best time is 47 seconds.

What's the LONGEST it took you to solve the cube? I'm still working on mine since '82...

The furthest i got with rubiks cube is my neighbours back garden! i have quite a decent throw! Laughing

The most clever person with this whole Rubik's Cube thing was Rubik himself - imagine how rich he got out of it!

I got a new cube for christmas (old one didn't turn properly). My time has dropped to 1 min 40 secs (over an average of 12 cubes).

Oh no dude! Maybe you should attend one of our parties! I'm guessing you'll never do rubic's cube party tricks again!!!

A little update on my cubing activities. I have been doing upwards of 20 cubes a day (I keep stopping and doing a few turns while writing this) and I am getting slowly better. My new cube is getting a little worn in terms of stickers now, I've done it so many times since Christmas.

I'm going to get some lubricant for it soon, I'm told that silicon based lube is the best for cubes.

Alex_M
Yeah, I use some sort of silicon-base. Anyway my record time is 40.17 seconds. I've been improving little by little for about three years.

My rubik's cube broke. The blue centre peice snapped off while I was cubing; so I have ordered another one.

I used to play with a rubiks cube when I was younger, I got it when I was 5 or so at a yard sale mostly for the pretty colors and I didn't really play with it until a few years later. I always felt that it involved the same kind of thinking as in chess.

In fact I was on the offtopic board to make a topic about exactly that so finding this thread was a little spooky.

My new cube came today. I'm wearing it in for a bit before I lubricate it.

I have one cube for about three weeks now. And I still can't figure out. Frown
