Don't read E E Doc Smith. His Lensman series is impossible to read. Literally. You will have to look up 3 words every sentence. He uses vocabulary that is off the planet.

I've seen that usually, the cooler someone's ideas, the worse they are at actually writing. So maybe his stories are actually fantastic if only someone could decipher them?

He was a great writer, He wrote the Lensman in magazine format and it was put together into books.
It's just that he uses pentasyllabic, obscure vocabulary that would challenge a college professor. I have a large vocabulary. I could come up with words at school that would befuddle experienced English teachers with Phds. E e Doc Smith is the only author who has ever "defeated" me. I gave up after 2 pages with Lensman. It was EE dOC Smith winning 6-0 in staight sets.

Yep the one and only, much as Hollywood does love an anti-hero, sexy femme fatales, heavy calibre weapons fire and a good old fashioned punch up certain aspects of Jim's philosophy about society and how it functions does get some folk nervous.
Will never forget reading the "Robbing banks is good for the economy" speech as a kid, even now every word of it still rings true.
