---   Yes Rathbone also did a very good job as Holmes, I've forgotten when his version was first aired but it was many many years ago.

Back in the late 1970's I saw "The Seven-Percent Solution", a movie which I went into totally blind. It dealt with Holmes' cocaine addiction but I recall thoroughly enjoying the movie...

Well I'm not sure about the best but a very funny movie that I enjoyed had Doctor Watson as the brains behind the whole thing ( well played by Ben Kingsley ). In this movie Watson had written the books on Sherlock Holmes but had only made that character up. Then a real Holmes was needed for a case so Watson hired an out of work Stage-Actor to pretend to be Holmes ( well played by Michael Cain ).

I need to get the BBC series with Jeremy Brett because he's my favorite Holmes. I have a number of Holmes movies on DVD. Of those I have Holmes was played by Basil Rathbone, Peter Cushing, Ronald Howard, Robert Stephens, Reginald Owen, and Michael Caine. I have both movies with Robert Downey Jr. but I consider them just action/adventure more than actual Sherlock Holmes movies. I've seen a number of episodes of a TV series with Geoffrey Whitehead playing Holmes. He seemed to do a good job but I haven't seen enough to firmly decide. You can find it on Youtube.

My favorite Holmes movie is "Without a Clue" with Michael Caine playing Holmes and Kingsley's Watson being the brains of the team. It may not strictly be a Holmes movie but it's hilarious and well worth watching.

What I enjoyed about the Cumberbatch and Downey Jr versions of Sherlock was the way in which they both tried to depict the thought processes of the character.
