I've never understood why people get so bent out of shape about things like down votes and a thumbs down.
If a person is getting negative reactions like that on a regular basis, then shouldn't that person take a moment and think "Hmm, maybe there is something about my behavior that could be changed or improved in some way?"
If it only happens once in a while, then it was probably just a gentle reminder that you're drifting into questionable territory.
Either way, why do people care so much? Why invest so much of your mental and emotional energy into an emoji?
