I can only think of 2 people who are worse actors than Shatner; thank goodness neither of them were ever in any episode of ST or any of its spinoffs.
So ... Anyone else been to Vulcan ???
Aha ! I've been waiting for you to post here Javan64. I know that you are not a Shatner fan lol. Mind you there are certain people who fit certain roles and so there is only one Captain Kirk.

Actually, there is a second Kirk, and this fellow is a much better actor (which wouldn't take much).

Putting the acting to one side for a moment, the various Enterprise captains had different approaches: Kirk a womaniser, Picard a philosopher and Archer a dog-lover.

Thanks for the new posts.
I gather that way back when Gene Roddenberry first tried to sell his Space Adventure show in Hollywood he described as being like " Wagon Train In Outer Space ". This was of course at a time when the Westerns were very popular and I think that the comparison to those shows is significant. I imagine that Shatner was probably told to play his role like the White Hat wearing Heros in the Westerns ( eg like the Marshal in " Gunsmoke " ). I would say that his character had a limited range in what he was allowed to do in the show.

Actually, there is a second Kirk, and this fellow is a much better actor (which wouldn't take much).
If you're talking about his kid, that twerp couldn't save the Enterprise from a tribble.

No, of course I'm talking about Chris Pine, who played Kirk in the (relatively) new ST movie, which (among others) had the actor Eric Bana as JAGV (Just Another Generic Villain).
Thanks for the post and for the clip.
Shatner seems to like to keep busy, way back on Page 2 of this thread I mentioned that he has recently put out another Book. I gather that he is still doing his one-man shows as well ( plus some ads too of course ). As the old saying goes " make hay while the Sun is shining ".
In my thread on " Silly Rules in Chess " the name of Bobby Fischer recently came up. My theory is that he was a Robot like Mister-Data in STNG and may have been sent from the future. Some people might think that this is a silly theory but it did occur to me while I was over in my thread with " Silly " in the title. However his programming did go a bit off-kilter in his later years tho.

Actually, I am rather fond of Captain Rachel Garret.
Who is Rachel Garret?
TNG "yesterday's enterprise"; she willingly led her crew back through a rip in time to return to her own timeline and to certain death in order to spare the Federation of years of war against the Klingons. It was her actions that brought peace between the Federation and the Klingon empire by intervening on behalf of an enemy during a Romulan attack.
Thanks for the new posts.
As I mentioned earlier I do like Captain Kirk, however Captain Picard is also a good Commander. Indeed I think that the casting folks did quite a good job with all of the Star Trek projects.

It's difficult to compare captains from different eras. For one thing, they had different styles. The level of their opposition may have varied.
Kirk was also under more severe time controls, i.e. five years. It would be interesting to know how Kirk would do with the more modern technology.
KIrk did seem to more thoroughly dominate the opposition of his era. However, that was more of a Romantic period. Picard, of course, could study Kirk. He seemed to dominate for a longer period.
CaptainPike: Yes after thinking back I realized that I have that episode on a DVD around here somewhere, I'll have to watch it again.
MyCowsCanFly: Those are good points that you have brought up. If one takes the time to examine the changes in special effects that have taken place since the first series was aired the one can see the progress forward. Even going forward to the movies based on the first series there were some major changes in technology. The STNG series was lucky enough to benefit from all of these advances ( followed by everything new created by Star Trek since ).
I see that somebody has brought back a thread from a couple of years ago that was comparing Kirk to Picard, it looks quite interesting.
Thanks for the post Artfizz. I guess that in my case I have have to stick with Captain Kirk, having seen the old series back when it was first shown on TV. Of course younger fans may have seen the newer versions of Star Trek first and the old series at a later time.
