I don't know that I've done a speedrun, but I've done all of solo chess.

I've done it before.
Maybe if you want to try it totally seriously, actually use livesplit.
I do.... -_-
only problem is I got to pause to split which probably costs me around 10 seconds throughout all of the solo chess run
? Just enable the setting that detects keyboard strokes globally and set it to spacebar eg so that every time you get to the next level you hit space which isn't much of an inconvenience.

Enable global hotkeys, so that every time you hit "split", it counts it even when livesplit is not in the active window. So, while you are in the browser, just hit split (space in my case) when you start and every time you progress a level, and even though you won't see it, it will split the split.

how do you keep the split tab to stay open when you split or start
I don't quite know what you are asking. I know there is an option somewhere that I use to always keep livesplit in the foremost layer over other tabs, if that's what you mean?

whenever I click start, the thing goes away. Is there a way to make splitting happen by just pressing something like the spacebar?
What "thing"?
