Talking about the cushing syndrome (No politics or religion)

The purpose of this thread is informational, about the cushing syndrome, and also to share experiences or if you know someone who has it.

The cushing syndrome is named after the first brain surgeon who discovered the condition, harvey cushing.
The cushing syndrome is a syndrome that occurs when the body's tissues are exposed too much to an hormone called Cortisol. The cortisol is an hormone that plays roles in almost every organ and tissue of your body, and is often related to stress.
People who suffer this syndrome might experience (common symptoms):

Weight gain in the trunk, while having thin arms and legs
Weight gain in the face
Either pink or purple stretch marks specially located on: stomach, hips, thighs, underarms
Buffalo hump (which is a fatty lump between the shoulders)
thin and frail skin, susceptible to bruising very easily
Slowed down process of wound healing
And Acne

Other symptoms that can vary within the persons that suffer the Cushing syndrome can include:
Depression, anxiety, irritability
extreme tiredness
trouble concentrating/remembering
affected cognitive function
headaches
high blood pressure
Bone loss
stunted growth in the case of children/young people

NOTE: If you suspect to have this syndrome, it is important to go to a doctor to confirm that you effectively have it.

Causes:
The most common cause for cushing syndrome is iatrogenic corticosteroid use. Some herbal preparations can increase the levels of circulating corticosteroid levels leading to cushing syndrome.
cushing syndrome can also be reached by having the cushing disease. The cushing disease is a disease where a pituitary adenoma (which is a benign tumor) on the pea-size pituitary gland is the responsible of producing too much adrenocorticotropic hormone. this causes our two adrenal glands to increase the production of cortisol, and causes problems on the hormone balance.

If you have any experience with someone that has this syndrome or if you directly have this syndrome, please share your experiences. If you want to contribute with additional information, welcome.

I just finished reading this thread and i find the syndromes topic quite interesting, if you can i'd like you to keep writing about syndromes.
i already read about the cushing syndrome before but i kinda forgot about it. I remember it was not easy to get it diagnosed

Avatar of Captain2basilisx

the reason is not easy to get it diagnosed is because some people think you are just making it up, to justify your overweight (Awful way to think, affecting people with diseases).

Avatar of Captain2basilisx

in fact i've read histories about how even some doctors don't believe they have the cushing syndrome and believing those people just make it up to justify their problem with weight.

Avatar of Poweranony

i will try to have time to write about other syndromes.
And yeah, it is true. Some times people don't get diagnosed because they're accused of making things up, and that does not only apply to the cushing syndrome. It applies to a lot of illnesses

A virtual friend told me once that another friend of him had the cushing syndrome, that's the only case i've known so far by myself. he actually told me some symptoms that person suffered:
stubborn belly weight with thin limbs
appetite being actually suppressed because of the high cortisol levels
From what i remember, he had low vitamin D, low vitamin b, low magnesium, and insulin resistance. Also, he had extreme fatigue, specially on mid day
That's what i remember from that conversation

I've read in reddit some people with cushing syndrome having similar symptoms

That sounds terrible.

Avatar of Poweranony

it is indeed terrible.
In fact, there's been already confirmation that you can pass away because of the cushing syndrome if left untreated.

Very interesting

The obesity caused by the cushing syndrome can cause other serious health problems such as blood clots in legs or lungs, bone loss and fractures, even type 2 diabetes. this is according to information of the site webmd
Which is why it is important to diagnose and treat it

Indeed it's a very interesting topic.
Endogenous Cushing syndrome is rare according to the national institutes of health. Endogenous means something inside of the body is causing the disorder.
Cushing syndrome is cause mostly because of the use of some medicines that end up in a way, inducing the increase of cortisol

Avatar of Polygonatic2_26

The cushing syndrome by itself is a rare condition,
it affects around 10 to 15 people per million every year, according to endocrine society studies.
It is also shown to be more common in women

It is true #14
Some studies reveal that the pituitary adenomas in the cushing disease (which often leads to the cushing syndrome) differ from men to women in hormone content and gene expression patterns, which can also indicate that the biological gender influences in the molecular behavior of tumors

Avatar of Poweranony

According to cushingdiseasenews, some researchers noticed in the genetic pattern that a greater proportion of women have the USP8 genetic variant compared to men. That was got examining the adenomas extracted in surgeries of cushing's disease

Just to clarify if anyone reads this thread and start thinking cortisol is always harmful: Cortisol by itself is not bad. The bad thing is always the excess.
The cortisol hormone is related to stress, that's because our body produces it under "emergency" situations so we can face those problems.
When there is a situation of danger, our brain sends a signal to the adrenals glands to secrete steroid hormones like cortisol and aldosterone. When cortisol gets secreted, there is an increase of glucose in the blood in order to send an energy boost to the muscles.
however, if the cortisol secretion is extended over the long term, glucose is produced constantly and so the levels of sugar on blood increase, which is why cortisol has a bad fame.

Diet and exercise as gregg said are quite important, in order to try to keep from gaining weight and also from losing more muscle strength.
But normally the treatment of cushing syndrome is to remove surgically the causative tumor. Basically removing the adenoma, at the cost of having the risk of losing the pituitary function which regulates body functions through the hormones that it produces. That's why surgeons have to try to not remove that function as much as possible

Avatar of Poweranony
Some treatment may as well include medicines that control cortisol levels.
Also, sometimes the surgery is made to remove the adrenal glands in order to remove the cortisol produced.
Avatar of Poweranony
The surgery removing adrenal glands implies that the person will have to take medicine to replace the cortisol and aldosterone that the adrenal glands produced
