Long ago, there was a boy named Mathnerd who lived on a small village on an island far from the mainland. Folklore says that there was a creature called The Morb. According to folklore, once every few centuries, it would launch a great raid on human civilization, destroying humans and animals alike.
One day, Mathnerd decided to pull a prank on the villagers by saying that The Morb was coming. The villagers, shocked, checked it out. There was no Morb. Mathnerd then admitted that it was a prank and let out a small chuckle. The next day, he pulled out the same prank. The villagers, now slightly annoyed, still checked it out. There was no Morb either. Mathnerd then said that it was a prank and let out a small chuckle.
The next day, the Morb actually came. Mathnerd called for help, however, the villagers thought he was lying. He watched helplessly as the Morb devoured his sheep and let out a loud cry. Even when the villagers saw the Morb, they refused to help Mathnerd. Cheerfully watching it tear Mathnerd’s flesh, a village elder said:
- Good. He’s getting the punishment he deserves for lying.
Then, the entire village evacuated into the mainland and told the story.
When the news reached Tsarist Russia, they called Mathnerd the «Морблжец», which meant “Morb Liar” in Russian, which then evolved into «Морбже».
In 1795, Russia alongside Prussia and Austria partitioned Poland. Catherine the Great installed libraries in Warsaw, carrying Mathnerd’s story with it, which in Polish they called him “Morbże”.
In 1830, two British scholars visited Warsaw. Coming upon Mathnerd’s story, they misinterpreted “Morbże” as “Morbze”, which in American English evolved into “Morbz”.
