The moderation on OTF needs to improve.

the moderation has the power to remove tons of forums that are inappropriate or specific people that act inappropriate and yet they get overlooked a good portion of the time. community and moderators both combine to make the problem, with the community actually causing it and the mods semi-allowing it to happen (except for extreme circumstances)

I don't blame the moderation completely, but spam threads and users who spam can easily be muted or removed.

I think they need more staff...

Probably. But that would mean less money for chess.com.

Avatar of BasixWhiteBoy

Moderators are unpaid volunteers, and the staff is paid about $80000 a year.

Martin and Atti are good examples. They're volunteers who do so much for the community without being paid. Cheers to them.

I agree with most of this, except the part about bumping old threads. I think if you are genuinely interested in bringing the discussion back, an instant mute is not warranted.

It is if all they say is "bump" and don't add to the discussion.

,

I agree with what Basix is saying. If a discussion isn't interacted with, the topic's interest has stabilized to zero. This means that everything that was said has been said, and therefore there is no need to reinstate the discussion unless new information or something of meaning is added to the discussion that re-sparks it. It has already been seen, so if it isn't constantly being interacted with then that means the discussion ahs run it's course. "Bump[ing]" it won't reinstate the same level of interest, nor does it re-attract those who formerly had interest on the topic. If you're going to say something, at least have it carry some meaning...

Right. It’s not like I’m saying bumping threads is bad, since it can bring back a fun game, interesting discussion, or just bumping for nostalgia. These are good reasons to bump threads. When all you’re doing is trying to be a pest by saying “bump” and not adding to the discussion in the slightest, that’s where I think it’s fair to give them a day mute.

I don't blame them completely either. I don't blame them at all for the actions taking place, I just think that there should be more emphasis on muting/deleting forums on OTF that are inappropriate or useless. As of right now barely any forums are deleted or locked without directly requesting it. Can't a mod just quickly comb through OTF's 3 or 4 active pages every couple of days? There are at least 10 mods, so one of them should at least have 10 minutes to spare to look through forums in OTF and confirm their safety. The 'astolfo' character forum has a lot of innuendo. I see no changes with the way the forum is going. Mods should have seen it by now and dealt with it somehow, even just saying "keep it nice" would be enough...

Right. What frustrates me most is when they move spam threads from GCD or other sub-forums instead of deleting them completely. I think that they’ve kind of accepted that OTF is becoming a junkyard for kids to spam and whatnot, which is unfortunate. After all, OTF is what they’re least concerned about.

FYI, we'll review all comments that are reported by the community. Sometimes we take action and sometimes it's not necessary. Not everything violates the community policy... sometimes people just report comments they don't like. Not all actions mods take are public.

I also invite members to share comments with me directly after they report it if it's urgent.

Bumping content that has been idle for years, where the discussion is no longer relevant, and the participants are likely no longer active, even with adding more than "bump" isn't helpful. At that point just start a new topic.

Ok I think I understand it a little better, thank you.

I’m a better moderator than some of the ones here. I’ve gotten two people banned!

Haha just kidding but I do think there should be a faster response time for spammers.
