The Monarchy. What is it for?

A sense of history...yeah, that's it.

Bill Gates?  Another in the line of Carnegie, who made a fortune building companies by questionable labor practices--the Unions formed in response to the likes of him--then rehabilitated his name by giving some of his fortune to public causes.  Is that a good model for society?

Isn't it true archeologists consider that the early Anglo-Saxons ran society such that no one person or group was more important than the others?

Impractical, maybe that story about Bill Gates is apocryphal. You state it as fact. I know a couple of people that worked for Microsoft in earlier days. One in California and the other in Australia. They were both paid fairly for their work. Also any businessman that gives as much to "good causes" as Bill Gates does deserve at least a balance between praise and cynicism; In my view. So many business people do nothing for anybody else ; including their own families. I wonder how much of their wealth the Kardashians, Paris Hilton or Justin Bieber give away?..But on balance I have to sing the praise of a few celebrities with generous hearts. Keith Richards gives a lot to charity. And he gives a lot to nurture young musicians. A damned fine human being is Keef. It is said that Sandra Bullock gives a lot away as do Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Angelina Jolie. At the end of the day it is down to the individual character of a business person as to how generous or philanthropic they are. The fact that somebody is rich and famous or very successful in builidng a huge company does not automatically make them an A hole. I reckon there are a lot of people you could pick on before you start on Bill Gates

Howlin, just sounds like you are another of the believers in "it doesn't matter how you got rich, it's what you do with (some) of your wealth."

Not at all mate. That is not what I think. I am happy to tell you what I am, what I believe in and what my values are with regard to social and economic justice. But only if you're interested. You're probabaly not though. Sounds like you already have me pretty much summed up. C'est la vie. But the offer is there.Laughing

great topic I do see that America has always had deep ties with the Monarch influence. there seems to be much connection if you pay close attention. also the way or should I say direction america is going it is rather interesting to see the constitution be destroyed

Your law is based on English common law principles. Habeus corpus..innocent until proven guilty..trial by jury and seperation of powers blah blah.  But from what I understand the US system as enshrined in the constitution is deliberately non monarchical (Is that a word?) The head of state is elected not heriditary.

Yes but will the Queen save God?..

Probably, she's reputed to be very frugal.
