Rasputin
Grigori Rasputin was a peasant born in Siberia. Following a religious epiphany he travelled accross Russia preaching and eventually reached St Petersburg, at that time the Russian Capital and seat of power of Tsar Nicholas II and his family. His sermons attracted great attention and he became close to the Royal family. However, his influence was viewed with suspicion by some powerful figures and when Tsar Nicholas left Russia in 1915 to take direct control of the army fighting in WW1 it left the Tsarina Alexandra in power and Raspitin's influence grew further. The war was going badly for Russia, anger was rising, and eventually in 1916 he was murdered in murky circumstances. Just a few weeks later the Russian revolution began, deposing the monarchy.
