Hello everyone, and welcome to my rant. Today's topic, thread diversity in OTF. So sit back, relax, and read (if you want, however it is greatly appreciated.)
Lately I've noticed, well not lately, it's been happening for a good bit of time, that the thread diversity in the Off Topic Forums where most of us lurk often, isn't really existent. Now almost every thread is either and AMA, a chat thread, or an AMA turned chat thread. Now don't get me wrong, chatting with people is nice, it's a human need for interaction, but the amount of chat threads here is a tad bit absurd.
During the beginning (haha, Beginning making a beginning joke...) of my stay here in OTF, the main type of spam post was "above you" threads. While there are still a few stragglers from the peak of that specific type of threads popularity, when we put them in comparison to AMAs/Chat threads, the difference is astronomical. So, is this just an OTF phase? Well currently, that question does not have an answer, we can't answer that until the chat threads possible decline. But it brings up a good point, why is almost every thread here just so similar? A simple answer to this is the craving for popularity. Let's take the popular thread, OTFDAN, created by Basix for example. People, mainly newcomers, see this thread with hundreds of thousands of posts, thinking it would be cool to achieve something similar (although OTFDAN is way larger than anything else here). This makes people create similar threads to try and profit off tbs success of others.
Now don't go and take my message as hate towards anyone, I'm not calling anyone out, I mean at some point in time we've all been attention seeking and tried to get as many comments as possible. I just want to possibly bring attention to the topic and encourage new people to think outside of the box and create new and creative thread ideas. I myself have attempted this, well with lots of help from other OTFers, such as Mei, Car, and Slim Shady. We created an OTF Yearbook, now wether or not the project was completed, that's a different story, but that's not the point. The point is to try and experiment with thread creating, start something never done before and that could make you "popular", the true goal of most new OTFers. This will also make others recognize you as the person who made that one cool thread, and didn't follow the OTF trends.
Although creativity isn't for everyone, but this place is a pretty creative community to be honest, channel your inner artist and create what you want, and try to set out to make something never before seen here on Off Topic Forums.
OTF is like a sandbox, and that sandbox is filled with plenty of sandcastles, those castles however all look relatively similar. You, you must strive to be the one to stand out, not to out-do one another and try to compete (mainly because that's why I'm here writing this thread about this spam epidemic), but something that is unique enough to slightly stand out and catch someone's eye.
Anyways, thanks for reading if you've gotten this far, it's greatly appreciated. -Beginning 🦤
