Put a lion and yourself in a room. Your morals will tell you not to hurt it, but it would have no problem killing you to survive. Makes you think, is it even worth saving it's life in the first place?

I was addressing everyone in common, but most have a moral of "do not hurt another life".

Anyway, in his book, Niccolo Machiavelli warns the reader of encountering “monsters”, people that are ruthless beyond imagination. The book is meant to teach the reader that the only way to defeat or even equal them is to become them. Because if the reader does not adopt their methods, then they might become a victim.
The “monsters” he talks about are comparable to the lion in your scenario.
