Equality is worth pushing. I don't mind women's tournaments and speaking out against bad behavior... but that particular article was fairly childish, IMO.

I disagree, if they remove all the women's titles and tournaments, fewer women will be able to make money from chess.

I don't mind them trying to lure more women into chess... I do mind the idea that "sexual violence" is what's keeping women away from the game.

Presenting average chess player as sexually violent predator is laughable imho

Unicorn_Horn12

And look, I'm fully open to being proven wrong. It's the year 2023. Wear freakin' body cameras, it costs basically nothing. Do an undercover operation and get all these "sexually violent" chess players in prison. I'd fully support that...

... but I think we all know that's a bunch of BS... (and I'm not saying crimes don't happen).

I thought the same thing, usually predators of any kind behave the same. So easy nowadays to have a bodycam and a mic to record everything. Now, given, not all tournaments will allow it, but still, at least try to have some kind of hard evidence.

Another thing that bothers me about the letter, why were they silent? If the abuse and violence were so heinous, where are police reports? Where are ethical complaints with FIDE etc, etc

I do think you are right; it is a pile of bovine excrement.

It could have been done much better.

For example even in this article:
https://www.archysport.com/2022/10/susan-polgar-uncovers-endless-cycle-of-sexual-harassment-driving-girls-out-of-chess/

Susan Polgar says she was sexually abused... but this is said in a very watered down way:

“When I was younger and starting to develop physically, I was sexually/physically harassed/abused,”

Does that mean sexually harassed and physically abused? What does that mean, you were punched?

I happen to have some inside information on this, and what happened was much worse than the article's phrasing suggests, and of course it wasn't her fault for not reporting it since she was a minor.

If we want to talk more about crimes, that's fine, let's let the world know and stop hiding it. I support that... but that's not what their open letter did.

It's a tough topic, and it requires adult-level conversation. I think both the open letter and chess.com's article failed, but anyway, that's just my opinion.

“Personally, I know many women who have walked away from chess because it is simply not worth dealing with this nonsense year after year" - Suzan Polgar, from the same article.

Is it a nonsense or is it harassment?

Is it a nonsense or is it abuse?

Is it a nonsense or is it a sexual crime?

Who, When and where.

With that information and any further evidence that can be gathered, whoever feels uncomfortable or unfairly treated in any circumstance, inside or outside a chess club, should go to the authorities and denounce it.

But accuse all chess players and clubs, in general, of not allowing woman on their spaces because we abuse them and harass them is insulting and just wrong.

Exactly, general shaming of chess players is a wrong approach imho

Oh so it was closed for everyone? I’m so relieved 😅 I thought it’s just me. Good! No complaining there. Some people had posted extremely stupid comments! I was wondering which world they’re living in. Maybe a parallel world.

People have a right to express their opinions, no matter how stupid they are.

Chessdotcom is at fault for posting the article imho

Oh, got it, why do you think CC "has to post it"?

While the subject is uncomfortable, how can CC, being the biggest chess site in the world, not post it when major newspapers have? They essentially have no choice in deciding whether to publish it or not.

Elaborate please, I still don't see it.

That’s one of your problems. You need sensitivity training.

Someone sharing their experience is fine. Much better than the open letter IMO.

I agree, however the way it is presented, did you read first few paragraphs?

Unicorn_Horn12

Yeah I already commented on the article.

Well done, but I think there is a disconnect because of the woke ideology.

They preach: "Silence is violence"

Words are so much worse for them
